Towing mileage question
Well, I've had my 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie for over a year now and I have yet to tow with it. I may be taking a trip to Moab, Utah next month and if I do I'm planning on trailer towing my 2000 Jeep Wrangler with me for some wheeling. Here's my question. I'm trying to figure out what the fuel costs will be as the 2400 mile round trip won't be light. So here are the specs on my truck: 2009 1500 Crew Cab with the 5.7L Hemi and 3.55 gearing. I don't have specs on a trailer yet as I'm shopping for one, but it should be a simple open one car hauler and I'll just be taking a SWB Wrangler. That being said, what ball park numbers can I expect to get for MPG's on the highway averaging 65~70 mph out there? Thank you everyone.
I'm awaiting your results...traded off my Cummins for this 4X4 1500 and hoping to get at least the same mileage (12mpg round trip avg) between AZ and AR, pulling a 14' V-nose enclosed trailer.
I'm getting about the same as you.
Don't forget to factor in wind. Wind will kill milage while pulling.

Yep, Wranglers are about as aerodynamic as a brick, so that will hurt me. We'll just have to see how much. I'd be thrilled to get 13 MPG towing the Jeep.
I get around 14-15 on the highway towing my jeep on a dolly, but the dolly only weighs about 400 lbs.
I average about 20 empty.
With a 7x16x6.5 tandem v-nose (about 4000 lbs) I get 9.5 - 10
With a 16' tandem car hauler empty I get 13-13.5
I haven't put anything on the car hauler yet to see what it will do to the MPG.
Truck is a 09 1500 CC Laramie with 20's and the 5.7 with the 3.55 rear. Speeds are around 70 average on the interstate.
