Need Help with 3.92 Gears and LSD
If you were to buy a whole pre built rear end from the dealer and it is not defected...there would be no noise. The noise comes from an incorrect build using wrong clearances, lash, shims and thrust adjustments. All pain in the rear settings needed to be done by a professional machinist and gauges. Any of you guys on here with RT's that have noisy factory rear ends...I doubt it, lol! My advise is to shop around and find a shop that specializes in this and let them purchase the set for you that will guarantee both parts and labor. Do not let them do the work if they tell you that all gear changes make noises...go some where else if they do or you'll be sorry (all of theirs do). And stay away from greasy dirty shops, look for a clean high tech shop. Most race car shops or speed shops can do this or give you a referal, ask around or surf the net. Or swap the whole rear end out for the build of your choice from an 09 Ram at a salvage yard. But make the right choice the first time and you'll be happy and with no noise. And BTW...pros that build rear ends, build them yoke down on a bench without the axles in them making it much easier to adjust everything. It's very difficult for anyone to adjust and measure clearances while it's in the vehicle because of the weight...just something to think about, good luck to ya!
Edit: I hope this helps you... 216-523-5000 (Eaton Corporation in Cleavland), call them and ask if you were to use theirs (not saying you should or have to), could they recommend a shop near by that would guarantee parts and labor for you..they should!

You call Eaton to find a reputable shop to do the work not to mention they are the makers of Detroit lockers, gears, blowers, you name it, and they sponsor performance companies such as Chip Foose and Overhauling to name a couple and I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't sponsor Moser Engineering which is another place he could call. And they make Detroit Lockers for Chrysler 9 1/4 rear ends....not just Dana 60, 70's and so on. You can get anything you want from this place...the number is 260-726-6689 (Indiana). If you want a real setup...ask about their M60 for your truck (I priced one for mine). But they can build you anything you want and you can believe that it will be done right. And by the way, Detroit Lockers do have a streetable locker that clutches somewhat in turns unlike the old days when I was racing. And they also have electrical lockers as well which I'm sure you know, but even they could recommend a good shop nearby to do your work. Don't be anyone afraid to call these people, they would be glad to assist...they love that kind of stuff. I've called all around the country about builds for my truck and had nothing but positive enthusiastic responses everywhere. Ask the about the winning noises and correct builds for your trucks as well

Just the parts cost to repair the one I had was more than the price of a new locker - which wasn't cheap in the first place.
Personally I would stick to a dealer for a gear replacement - and the only reason would be to preserve my lifetime warranty on the axle and all its parts.
Okay I just called both shops but both were hesitant to recommend a particular shop to do the work...but did say that you should make sure that who ever does the work is axle certified. They also said that possibly even a good reputable transmission shop could do the work...perhaps something like a nationally known shop maybe. Most of the people Eaton sells to are wholesalers and warehouse distributors...not shops. I told both Eaton and Moser about the forum and the noises and they agreed that there shouldn't be any at all but it could fall on the parts as well as the install. I'm gonna do some digging around to see what I can come up with and get back on this. I'm kinda tired of hearing of people getting ripped off with these gear and differential changes!
True enough - just stay away from their electric lockers. They are a horrendous pile of crap and prone to breakage. The ball ramp design causes the locker to lock and relock ever time you go from forward to reverse and the magnet ring is prone to snapping tabs and ripping the wiring out of the ring.

You loose the warranty even if you get oem gears installed by the dealer. A guy over at DT looked in to getting oem gears and the dealer told him it would void the warranty. He called chrysler about it and they said the same thing. I know it makes no sense but thats what they said
I really appreciate all the help. I contacted DTS (drivetrainspecialists.com) Im looking at 1400.00 for parts, this includes the Ring and Pinion for Front and rear, both rebuild kits with bearings and a locker for the rear. I was told its a waste of time and money to do an OEM LSD with 35's that im planning on because it will last about a month. I was able to find a transmission shop who does rear ends as well. The owner has no employees and he is 68 years old. he has a great reputation so im comfortable with him doing the work. I have one more call to make, (gears are us) to see if he will beat the prices I got on the parts, if not im ordering today and it will be installed next monday. I cant believe the headace this has been. But im hoping at the end of the day its worth it. I will keep everyone imformed. I'll do a seperate thread about the prototype kit that Pure Performance is installing with full coilovers ..
Great news...good for you! Remember now...those guys told me that it could be the parts as well as the install that cause the noises, Eaton and Moser so try to get the best quality you can afford! And glad to see that this guy explained the stress damage that can be caused by the strain of those large tires
