Do I have a factory alarm or not?
I dropped off the Ram this morning to have them checkout why my alarm is'nt working and the infamous key fob issue. Of course the service manager said if he can't duplicate the fob not unlocking the doors, he can't do anything about it. Sometimes the fobs work fine sometimes it takes many presses to unlock the doors, if I rearm the alarm then press the unlock button it eventually works. Now for the alarm issue, I remember about 6 months ago while I was detailing my truck the alarm went off, I did the check for an alarm light in the cluster, nothing and did the lock the door with the window open and unlock the door manually, waited a minute, no alarm. The service manager said that I did'nt have an alarm and I only have the sentry key alarm which will make the alarm go off if you use a different key.Well it sounded like in that last statement he made I have an alarm, he said the techs would check to see if I have the alarm light in my cluster. I read in other threads that we have an alarm in our Rams, any ideas would be great.Thanks.
Interesting, I asked this question a while ago. I also dont think that I have an alarm. But if you look at your cluster when starting there is a round red light I believe in the lower right hand side that would be the indicator light. But when I arm/lock the truck it does not blink. Let us /me know what the dealer says.

The dealer said the tech said that the last time a Ram truck had an actual alarm was 2006, the kind that if you bump into it, it goes off. He said it has a passive alarm which you can break into it, you just can't start it without the correct key. I'm still scheptical though.
I think kevinc66 is right. The new trucks have a passive alarm, unlike lets say a Viper alarm that has motion and proximity sensors that set it off. The factory alarm can be broken into but the ignition is disabled, supposedly rendering the truck unstartable. But lets be real, if it's a professional car thief he's gonna get the truck started. Lo-Jack I think is your last resort before an insurance claim. Which sucks when you have a lot invested in aftermarket parts, even thought some insurance companies claim they have coverage for that.
My truck did not have an alarm and I too had problems with the key fob opening the door on the first try. I had a Prestige alarm installed with tilt and glass sensors for about $400, now my doors unlock the first time every time. It does suck to carry two fob around and it never fails that the valet will try to unlock the door with the key fob without disarming the alarm with the alarm fob this causes the alarm to trigger and the dumbass sets there looking stupid....lol
It's just a basic alarm. Someone smashes your window and then opens the door - it goes off. Good enough to keep most folks from sticking around to rifle through your stuff too much.

Mine does'nt even do that, I tried locking the door with the fob with the window down and reaching in and opening the door, waited over a minute, no alarm going off.I just used the fob to lock the door and I used the key to unlock the door and gain entry, waited over a minute, no alarm. I just thing the techs at that Dodge are idiots and I might call the dealership where I bought the truck(43 miles away) and ask them.

My other 2 cars behave that way so I figured the Ram was the same way, I'll have to give it a try on the Ram.
