I've owned by 2010 Dodge Ram for 5 months now, and I have done moderate towing with it. However, today was the first time I was able to truly get a test for Dodge's multi link coil spring suspension, and 390 hp motor. I've owned a F350 with a 460 big block prior to this truck for four years, and have formed my biases with it along the way. But, after selling my Ford and buying a half ton dodge I have been left to wonder if the dodge could compete in towing. Anyway, today I towed a 7,800 pound mini excavator with a 2,000lb trailer, about 9,500 pounds I'd say give or take. In any event, I was blown away with the truck's performance. It handled well, and towed effortlessly, the suspension didnt sag as bad as I thought it would (I didn't put too much tongue weight on, just the minimum). The only thing that could be an issue are the undersized brakes, but beside that slight set back I was very pleased.. So if any of you are wondering how your RAMS hold up to the test, they do great!

I have to agree. Towing my Challenger behind the Dodge is very nice. It seems to be a very good setup Dodge put together. I have a 3.92 which helps and trailer brakes.

 

Trailer brakes seem to be the key with the towing. The power is there for sure, but you need help getting it stopped. Actually, you probably don't, it just feels like it.

LOL - Thanks! - I am a long time Mopar nut that enjoys driving and towing my cars around. Driving is so much better then towing, but sometimes the distance is too far to drive. it was pretty cool to see the same setup in the Dodge brochure except theirs is a T/A and mine is a R/T.

 

My father used to tow about 12,000 lbs with a double axle car trailer with 7 pin wiring WITH breaks on his 05 1500 HEMI through the mountains EFFORTLESSLY. The Hemi's are great tow engines. But yes, without trailer breaks if you're towing 12,000 lbs you're gonna be in big trouble

 

yea man .. you should not be towing 9k lbs without a trailer brakes .. i would at least suggest you get surge brakes installed .. go with the upgrade .. it will be worth it ... that's A LOT of weight for your half tons brakes ...

By the way the brakes on the 1500 dodge ram are PLENTY sufficient in my opinion to handle most towing jobs . but 9k lbs is ..phew . a lot ..

 

One more thing... My fathers buddy has a Chevy Silverado V6 and it doesn't have 4 wheel disc... that thing doesn't like to stop an 8,000 pound load worth a damn and his current V6 Ram 1500 stops it no problem... Brakes are VERY important...

 

Here in MN every trailer over 3000lbs is required to have brakes. I can't imagine towing 9000lbs without them. That's just asking for a disaster.
