Red face Tranny "issue".....think I got a problem?!

Got the truck in Oct 09...got 21k on it now. During the last week or two....it's happened twice now. When I start the truck the first thing in the morning and back out of the garage...I get a real short delay before it moves. And one time it moved back about 3 feet, stopped for 3 seconds, then continued on.
The other "issue" I am having is when turning corners while moving. Seems to be in the wrong gear (too low) after I get thru the turn.

Anybody here had anything like this?

My guess is this is the beginning of a long and drawn out, visit the service bay at the stealership saga, till they can figure out what the problem is!

As long as your trans fluid level is correct I wouldn't worry about it. Our Grand Cherokee (with the 545RFE) does the same thing every once in a while. I think there was actually a TSB about it for the Jeep but ours had too many miles for it to be covered. on the Jeep I believe there was some type of valve body that sometimes lets too much fluid drain out and it just takes a couple seconds to fill back up when you engage a gear.

If your truck is still under warranty definitely get the issue recorded with your dealer and see if they can find anything (or any TSB), but if they can't don't let it bug you.

some 3rd gens had the same problem. My 06 hemi did it all the time, if you just fire it up and put it in gear it would rev up a bit before moving, they called it "delayed engagement". I worked for chrysler at the time and read the tsb's, something to do with the return filter inside draining when sitting for a period of time. The solution was to change the filter and if the problem came back to tell the customer to let it idle for 10 seconds before trying to move the vehicle....

My truck has been doing the same darn thing for the past 15000 miles. I have already taken the truck into service and they could not reproduce the problem. The truck was allegedly re-flashed as part of another TSB and it seems to shift better, but that was short lived, the gremlins came back. I currently have 22000 miles on the odometer and here is what I have noticed in the past two weeks. When the truck seems to be stuck in the wrong gear like you stated, I turned on the tow/haul button and the stuck in 5th gear feeling goes away. My tranny will start to shift like it is supposed to. Try it and tell me what happens, I really believe this is a computer-controlling-the-tranny-shifting issue. I read a thread somewhere that the stealership changed some tranny module and the shifting problem went away. Like you, unless I can reproduce the problem at the dealer, then it is SOL bubba.

The dealers(employees) have stopped or don't call STAR(tech assistance) Thats were the engineers are set up to handle the different systems of the vehicle.Elect.Ac,Engine,trans etc. It takes calls nationwide and lots of times have fixes or know exactly what the issue is.Issues/calls are kept in a data base and such.I would MAKE techs call on certain things even could not duplicates and lots of times they would get off the phone and say GOT A HANDLE ON IT..They(Star)has had numerous calls on same issue and here's the fix etc. Not everything is a TSB or RRT. Bet a $100 bucks some trans tech or driveability tech has called and asked What do I fix or look at for that issue etc.Even if it hasn't been called in the engineers sometimes have a clue to what and why its doing such and such and what to test or look at. I'm told its done different these days as we had a room with a phone, desk etc.for techs to sit and make the call.I use to call Star myself from the service drive and pick their brain.

I had the slipping tranny after cold start and converter remaining locked at the first couple of full stops with tranny in "DRIVE" after pulling out of the garage.

Here are the Dodge Tech's troubleshooting steps from three different dealers during a two year period. (Note: there were no trouble codes in the computer)

Replaced PCM...no help (warranty)

Check fluid lines to tranny cooler for trapped air...no help (warranty)

Change tranny fluid filters and fluid...THIS MAY HAVE BEEN THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM TO BEGIN WITH BECAUSE I HAD PREVIOUSLY HAD THAT DONE AT A JIFFY LUBE.

Evidently, the filters can be installed IM-properly which creates a delay in line pressure to the SOLENOID PACK on the valve body. Because of the delay, the ELECTRIC (not electronic) solenoid relay sequencing gets confused and doesnt reset itself untill a few minutes pass with proper line pressure.

I confirmed this diagnosis with an independent tranny tech.

The low cost solution was a PROPER tranny filter change and fluid FLUSH at the dealership. This solved the problem for a couple years until the truck became a second vehicle and if it wasn't driven for a week or so both symptoms returned. (No warranty since this was a "service item")

The more expensive solution is the installation of a new solenoid pack and/or valve body but there is a lot of controversy over that solution so I didn't try it.

Is it possible the wrong gear problem is simply the mds was working and took a second to go to 8 cylinder mold? Sometimes i notice when I slow to turn and then accelerate the truck is sluggish for a second then response almost too much, always though it was still in 4 cy. mold for a second

There has been a lot of solenoid pack issues in the 48re used in the 03 to early 07 diesels.Bet its the same supplier. That would not surprise me at all. They failed and failed but continued to use the same supplier as some of the replacements failed etc. Also posts about changing filter and exchanging old fliud out fixed some for a while and such.

Good info Dakotaho. My '97 dak does the same thing. It started after I had the tranny rebuilt. I thought it was because they ran a different style cooler that allowed the fluid to drain back. I have to put mine in gear to get the trans to pump up.

As far as not shifting, I think it has to do with the way the trans is programmed. I think they did it to squeak more MPG out of the truck. I've found that driving in the city in tow/haul mode helps. It lets the tranny shift down to second instead of trying to make ya slug around in 4th. I got spoiled with my '07 cummins with the 6spd and exhaust brake. Wish they would have built a new 6sp to go with the 1500's
