The 6.1 makes a good SRT engine, and it makes more horsepower per cubic inch than any engine Chrysler has ever built. A good SRT engine does not always make a good pickup truck engine though.
Yea, the current 6.1 would never make it into a Ram from the factory. To much of a gas hog. It was that and the sticker that did in the SRT10.
If they redesigned the 6.1 like they did the 5.7 in 2009 maybe.
See, they would have to change the power band for me to even like the idea of the larger hemi in the truck.
Trucks just need low end torque, and not a motor that is a high revving monster.
That said, both of the rumors that are running around in this thread have been around for years. Does it need to happen? Yes. Will it happen? Who knows. No one here does that's for sure.
My buddy whom is an engineer at the truck plant just alerted me that there "may or may not be" (not sure if that's his way of "not" sharing secrets with me, or if it actually is still up in the air) a 30+ MPG V6 diesel in the near future manufactured by that motor company that Fiat owns VM Motori. He also said there is a diesel in the loops for the Chysler 300 that'll get 41 MPG...Just sharing
I will go on record. By 2013 I will wager a 6.4 srt type truck will be built. The former CEO of the company was moved over to run srt, which makes it seem like they are/want more srt's.
The 6.1 would be a poor choice for a truck engine, especially for a QC or 4x4. Even more so than the 5.7 (which really isn't a good heavy truck engine either), it makes too much of it's power up way to high in the RPM band for a heavy vehicle and the torque/displacement ratio isn't the greatest either.

Ironically, I asked him about it a few months ago and he said he highly doubts it, then about a month ago he said the same way he mentioned this diesel that there "may or may not" be the 6.4L in Rams

Yeah, I thought about back when I first heard this and it was talking of the 6.4L. I just made an (wrong) assumption that when the Challenger came out and they starting putting the 6.1L in the SRT8's I figured that they redesigned the engine from the original concept
