Default New Ram, horrible mileage!

Today was my first day with my new truck. Its a 2010 2500 2WD 5.7 Hemi shortbed crew cab.

Brought it home yesterday with 41 miles on the odometer. I put 80 miles on it today working. 90% city driving with approx 800# of pool supplies in the bed.

I used 1/4 tank of gas and the EVIC says I averaged 8.6 MPG!

I started watching the AVG MPG early in the morning and noticed the poor mileage and the rest of the day I drove with a VERY light foot to try and bring the average up, but it never did.

Should I be worried about this mileage? Does the computer have some learning to do? New motor not broken in? It seems that most of you are getting anywhere from 12-18 for the same driving.

8.6 MPG is totally unacceptable to me. I'll go broke at my current 35K yearly mileage!

i have a 1500 but when i first got mine it was only getting around 14 but after a few weeks i guess the computer learned and my mileage has really picked up...around 18 to 19 now. so i would give it a few weeks at least to see if you get any improvement

Depends on your definition of city driving. Lots of stop and go really kills the milage.

I would fill the tank and reset your odometer and your evic and then see how that works. Your vehicle was more than likely not reset from the dealer.

If you're just judging it on the first 120 miles I'd say give it a while. The first 40 were probably from test drives and/or idling in the dealer's lot and that would be awful mileage. Just reset the average mileage and watch it over the next couple hundred miles.

Just out of curiosity what do you figure you will get with that 7000lb truck with all the pool stuff maybe more? I am not being smart *** I am honestly curious.

Don't expect top fuel mileage untill the engine is well run in,usually this will take place after 1500 to 2500 miles, also keep a light foot helps, this engine gets much better fuel economy when it drops into 4 cyl. mode.....

Is there a 4 cyl mode in a 2500?

Break-in today is not what break-in was 15-20 years ago, basically after about the first 300 miles or so, it's pretty much broken in. Should see a small gain in MPG after the second or third tank of gas, but that's gonna about tell you where you are.

A 2500 is a LOT heavier truck than a 1500 and also does not have MDS, so don't expect anywhere near where the guys with 1500s are getting. Also, you definitions of "city" driving my be different than someone else's. You may be in constant stop and go traffic where someone else may just be in town and not on the interstate and you may both call it "city" driving.

My guess is you are gonna settle in somewhere around 10-11 mpg in what I consider "in town" driving and probably top out around 14-15 on the interstate with a 2wd 2500...

Considering it's a 2500, and not a 1500, with 800 lbs of gear, in 90% city driving, I'm guessing you'll be getting 12 mpg at best.

But yes, you should reset the EVIC and then wait until the engine is broken in.
