If you do all the maintnence by the book it would end up costing you more that having to fix a blown rear,trans, or motor.

I have to disagree here. If you do somethings yourself, use a local shop and not go to the "stealer" the maintenance is reasonable. I usually follow the following schedule (except for the plugs - which I agree is a rip off) and get about 10 years for my trucks and 150k miles.

DIY - Mobil1 oil change every 5k miles = 30 changes@$40 per = $1200
Shop - Trans fluid flush every 50k miles = 3 changes@$100 per = $300
shop - Plugs every 30K miles = 4 changes@$200 per = $800
DIY - Rear end fluid change every 30K miles = 4 changes@ $40 per = $160
DIY - Radiator flush every 50K miles = 2 flushes @ $30 per = $160

So, its about $2700 for ten years for the maintenance or about $270 a year. I don't think that is so bad.
