Dealer rustproofing $1200; worth it?
I pick up my new truck (finally!) on Monday and have been hit with this proposal (rustproofing for about $1200) and an extended warranty for about $1700.
Both seem EXPENSIVE.

If the extended warranty is a lifetime max care with $100 deductible, the $1700 is a little better than average. I want to say people tend to pay around $1900 to $2000 for that warranty. The rust proofing sounds like a complete rip-off to me. How long do you plan on keeping your truck and do you live near an ocean or in an area where they salt the roads in the winter? If you really want corrosion protection, I'd shop around at other shops like ziebart and get some quotes. I personally don't think they are worth it.
I am moving back to NH next summer so when I bought my truck they offered the rustproofing (undercoating)to me. It cost me $300 dollars. To me it was a small price to pay for the protection of the undercarriage that I got. Trucks rust out quick during a New England winter!
The warranty is a good price if its maxcare lifetime. undercoating is a rip off. My roads stay salted all winter and I've never had rust problems keeping vehicles 10 years. Just spray it off every now and then and it will be fine

On top of both prices is 13% sales tax just to make it worse.

I live in Minnesota and have driven vehicles for many years in the winter. MN has some of the worst winter driving conditions for vehicles, with all the salt and sand on the roads. Vehicles that have been built in the last 10 years (or longer) do NOT need additional rustproofing. My daughter's 1999 Grand Am looks just fine underneath, as does my 2001 IS300 (driven since 6/2000). Sure, they don't look as spotless as a AZ car, but they are not rustbuckets.
Don't waste your money on dealer-applied rustproofing. It is not needed.

The newer liquid salt they use up here in the northeast eats everything. Used cars and trucks all have holes in them like I haven't seen in many, many years. You'd swear we were back in the 70's. This stuff even eats through the brake lines if they are not coated.
