I believe open, not LSD but help me out. It's a 3.55 ratio. The window sticker doesn't mention LSD. Some of the repair part numbers include 5010322-AH gear kit, 5072498-AA bearing kit, 5017438-AA bearing, 5010320-AA lube. I don't see any LSD additive and I think that particular lube needs it for LSD rear ends.

I think the part number for LSD lube is 5102232-AA which includes the additive. That is not on my repair ticket.

Only the 3.92 and 4.10 axles are LSD. The 3.55 is open.

That is what I thought, so its the open 355's that are puking...funny I know for sure my uncle had the 392's and his rear end was replaced because it was howling at 80kmph.

No problems from my 09 with 3:55s yet at 20k miles so far (knock on wood).

A whiny/howling diff isn't necessarily a sign of pending major failure. If the noise is due to improper gear alignment or from stress placed on the axle by something like pulling hard while the wheels are on dry pavement then it's just a noisy irritation. If the noise suddenly appears and gets rapidly worse then it may be due to the situation here - a bearing going out or other loss of lubrication.

Default My rear end failed

I was just doing a trip from ontario to bc which is about 3500 kms with a 26ft RV, and about half through my trip my diff started howling. It got a little bit worse as i went but i was still able to get to where i wanted. It was kinda loud and had to turn my music up so i didn't hear it, and it dissapeared as soon as i let off the throttle. I brought the truck in to dodge and they said my diff is pooched and need a new one. Not really impressed so far with the truck and myself. Why myself? Because i never changed the oil in the diffs and truck is at 60 000kms, but i always wanted to do it but never got to it, plus where i change my oil they check the diffs, and always said it was good so.

But anyways got a call back from dodge and they said they needed any records of work done on the diff or servicing, which is none. It has never been touched and personally i don't think not changing the oil would fail a diff at 60 000kms. I have a toyota parked in the yard with 320 000 kms and pretty sure the oil was never changed.

We all learn from our dumb mistakes, plus i wanted to change to a better ratio anyways so now's a good excuse. But i'm just curious to know if warranty will cover this or they will argue that the oil was never changed, either way im gonna complain my truck is at the dealership all the time.

Well see how this goes.

I'd say that you are going to be getting a big bill since the manual says that the rear diff oil needs to be replaced every 30km if you are doing heavy towing.

Only thing that might save you is if the dealer has been doing your service and never told you that it should be replaced.

If you have been trusting the word of a 16 year old at the local Jiffy Lube about the condition of your gear oil, then you are probabally out of luck.

Drive train blew apart and then rear end locked up after shaft damaged fuel tank, exhaust systems and told $9,000 plus damage!! 106,000 Kms will it be covered under extended warranty?? Has anyone else over the 100 K been covered? Thankfully it was me not anyone else in the family driving at the time.

Haha awsome, I think I'm gonna stop reading these now I'm always scared my "tuff" looking truck will fall apart in the middle of town and ill be stuck there waiting for a tow truck in a brand new truck. Obviously people who have problems will come and discuss them here but dam seems already like too much problems.

To add to my story they never warrantied my work, which is fine because I was upgrading from the cheap 3.55 to 4.56. Now I'm in love with my truck again, but I did notice a minor howl, but only I can hear it, if I'd go to the dealer hed tell me its my TBS so I don't bother.

Good luck with ur trucks out there guys
