DIY rear axle service
I take the covers off, good to be able to see if there is any sludge and inspect the gears for play. Get yourself a small cup brush for your cordless drill - makes cleaning off the rtv quick and painless.
On my old GMC, if you had the LSD, the axle fluid had to be changed at 15K miles. The plates do wear some and crud gets in the fluid.
Another clarification, the additive is a "friction modifier" that adds more slip to allow the LSD to slip as needed. Most synthetics now days come premixed for LSDs. After changing the fluid, go to a big parking lots and do tight figure eights to get the new fluid on all of the slip surfaces
