The NVG246 transfer case (Auto 4WD) is only available in the Laramie trim package. The 246 also requires special fluid for servicing. ATF is not an acceptable fluid for this case. A special NVG246 specific fluid is available at the parts counter. Use of other fluids may damage the unit.

 

I have a 2011 Dodge Ram Sport and I have the 4wd auto feature.. I think this is the first year that the Sports have it.

 

One learns something everyday. Thanks for the info. I know in the past it was a Laramie specific option. Nice to see it offered in more trim packages. I am hoping the new version of the 246 has been revised to eliminate some of its previous bad habits. Had it in my '06. Worked great then spit the actuator and TIPM module...just out of warranty of course.

 

My 2010 Sport has Auto 4wd as well.

 

Nope! I have an early '09 Sport with 4x4 auto.

 

4lock is for driving to work in mud and snow. 4low is for when you are stuck and your not supposed to go over 25MPH. 4LOCK IS 1 REAR TIRE and 1 front tire under power on opposite side of truck. 4low" is all 4 tires under power and puts quite a load on your drivetrain.

 

The selection of 4lock vs 4low does not distribute power to 1 front and 1 rear wheel. 4low is a lower gear ratio in the transfer case giving you more power to all wheels. If all 4 wheels have equal traction you have an equal distribution of power to all wheels. If one wheel on an axle looses traction the type of differential you have determines power supplied to the individual wheels.

 

Also, on vehicles with LSD (like 3.92 rear ends) its definitely better than the 'one wheel driving per axle' situation.
