Default Installed Auburn LSD

Yesterday I had my Auburn limited slip installed by Thrust performace in Sayerville, NJ. They did an excellent job. No whine and no problems. The rear, when opened, looks very challenging. They also installed a Mag Hytec cover. Like alot of reviews say that the cover is close to swaybar or panhard rod. I am going there just to have them look at it. The Auburn LSD takes 80w 90 mineral oil and with the new cover it takes an addtional 2 1/2 qt, they do not recommend synthetic oil.

I had an Auburn unit put in mine when swapping out the gears last summer. Glad you're not having whine problems. I love the Auburn, and it does exactly as advertised.

As for oil, in mine they used Lucas with Redline friction stabalizer. I believe the Lucas was natural, but the Redline was synthetic. After the second gear/LSD install (first shop screw it up completely), I've had no problems at all with it. No whine, no chatter, nothing. It needs to be taken back in for a fluid change and inspection, but that'll have to wait till summer since I'm on extended "vacation" with Uncle Sam.

yeah big catch 22 when you install an Auburn LSD (I have one btw). Dodge calls for synthetic specifically in the rear diff and Auburn not only specs dino oil, but voids your warranty if a synthetic is found in there (trust me on this one, I've had this conversation with both reps and management at Auburn Gear). Make sure you use 4oz. of friction modifier.

I also use Lucas conventional in my rear diff and as a result I change the fluid at 15k, whereas I use Royal Purple synthetic in the front diff and change it at 30k miles...

Auburn recommends the use of mineral oil 80w 90 only, with either GM or Ford friction modifier 3 oz per qt. The use of synthetic will glaze the cone shaped pads and will create chatter which will make the LSD not work properly. I installed a Mag tec cover which will allow more fluid, almost 5 qts. The reason is that the required 75 140 weight oil is thicker and the 80w 90 is thinner but with the added cover it will help with any heat problems and oil breakdown. By the way Lucas oil is garbage, I had it in my other car and it foamed like crazy and made the manual shifting very notchy. I used Castrol hypoy 80w 90 because it had the best review of all the mineral oils and is the only rear axle oil approved for military trucks.
