Default Nitrogen - Good Idea or Waste of Money?

With my new tires I unwittingly spent an extra $40 for nitrogen filling. I never thought about it until now, so not even knowing why nitrogen has suddenly become the "thing to do" I did some research. The only (supposed) advantage I can find is that nitrogen won't allow the tire to rot from the inside (has this been a major problem that I missed somehow?) Anyway, to me it seems like paying an extra 10 bucks a tire just to prevent something that I've never heard of happening sounds pretty stupid.

Thoughts?

I think it can be a good idea over time...like you said you will see less rot on your tire, but it will also cause less corrosion on your wheels too. Some say they see a fuel savings over time aswell since nitrogen is less sensative to ambient temp swings...

The air we breathe, and thus the air that goes into your tires already contains roughly 80% nitrogen. The cost of nitrogen greatly outweighs the benefits of using it.

I agree... the snake-oil sales people pushing the stuff claim that the 21% of oxygen remaining, coupled with moisture in the air, cause rim corrosion and tire rot. The thing is, I don't ever recall either of these things being a problem... I've seen more than a few tires off the rims and never noticed any measurable corrosion or the dreaded "rubber rot". Flippin' scam, IMO...

Not saying it a scam or not but where I live in the arctic with extreme cold temps I have had very good luck with Nitrogen. I have 2 trucks and a car. Over the winter sometimes when there was a 15 to 20 degree temp drop we would get some tires that would lose pressure with just air in them. My buddy that owns a tire shop suggested that since the wheels are aluminum I should put Nitrogen in them and that problem would go away. So thats what we did and not one tire has lost pressure since. Best thing is He did it for free.
Works for me.

As said before.....SNAKE AIR = scam

Dont know about the rest of YOU guyz, but i`ve never rotted the inside of a tire out before it was time to replace them.
I guess it would benefit some car collector guyz to use nitrogen if they`re car sits alot.
Beside that, if you`re on a trip and your tire needs inflating, then what.

I also live in a climate where they salt the crap out of the roads here,
and i`ve never seen the inside of my wheels corroded either (alum or steel w/200,000 miles, never an issue)

I wonder what the nitrogen smells like when deflateing for tire change....lol
I`m sure most already know what standard tire air smells like....HEHEHEHEHEEEEE

I've never anyone even mention rim corrosion before this thread. Don't see how nitrogen would even help. I've only ever heard about it used because of losing tire pressure in temp changes.
