help me decide... get rid of my 2010 half ton to get a diesel or?

A lot of owners on this forum report that they have towed 4500lb+ travel trailers thousands of miles with their 1/2 tons and experienced few if any problems.

I think that your towing 45 miles per week / 2300 miles per year should work out fine.

I would recommend getting the lowest profile tank trailer available. I get about 15mpg towing my lowboy at that weight and barely 10mpg towing the same weight RV.

water is 8.35lbs a gallon so you will have 2505lbs of water......i say get a small 5x10 or so utility trailer that can handle that weight and mount the water container on it and save the money of a new truck

The trailer is the best option, and cheapest and easiest to maintain.

You can always drive slower, loaded, to make it much easier on everything.

300 gallons of water should weigh on the plus side of 2000 pounds. Plus the trailer weight.

this is the way to go, 5.9 is a less complicated, but both are good.

I have 1250 lbs of concrete retaining wall blocks in the bed of my (a 1500) truck right now and I can't even imagine another 1000+ lbs. At least not as a routine load. Trailer option sounds much smarter to me. Hopefully you will be hauling water on level ground and not in the mountains. Whatever tank you haul in, hope its baffled. Whatever you decide, good luck!

If you're counting votes. Unless you just really want a diesel. Which I can understand. My vote would be get an appropriate trailer and tank. A Dodge 1500 Hemi will pull 5 or 6000 pounds without much problem, with the right rear end gears anyway. I'm thinking $8000 dollars buys a lot of trailer and water. You'll be able to use it for other projects and maybe there is somebody else you can haul water for to help cover expenses. Good Luck.

Ya I'm going with a tandem axle trailer rated for 7,000lbs.

Its funny, ask a gas owning 1/2 ton guy and they say keep it, get a trialer and air bags.

Ask a guy who owns a 3/4 diesel and you get the "get a diesel you'll never look back.. lower gas better reliabitly better wear"..

It was a hard choice but I'm getting a trailer and airbags.. If I feel the need to get the diesel, I will next spring

Well I have both, a 2009 Hemi 1500 and a 2001 Ford F250 7.3L Power Stroke. And based upon what I read and the need to spend your limited funds carefully.
IMO that's the correct move for now. Don't get me wrong. I love driving and using the diesel for pulling and hauling. Your current truck with the right trailer will be your best bang for your buck.

you can pick up a trailer capable of towing that for a grand or 2
