Default Brakes

Has anybody had problem with there rotors warping ? i had my rotors and brakes replaced 3 times on my 06 with 60k kms and at 55k kms on my 09 i am just tired of the vibration while braking. i think the stock parts are a weak metal maybe or maybe im just hard on my brakes even though i feel like i usually am pretty gentle on my brakes. I do have 37" tires so there is a lot more weight that im stopping.

has anybody switched to drilled/ slotted rotors and ceramic pads? if so, any prices or recommendations on them. all i see is a ton of them off ebay but i dont know how i feel about those.

Not relating to my RAM - but my wife's Caddy.

Had the same problem with surging, vibration, shimmy - and replaced brakes with expensive steel rotors, and ceramic pads. No difference, once they got worn, and warped.! Went back to cast rotors, and normal organic pads.

As before, when it starts to vibrate again, we'll just replace parts as needed, with basic replacement parts.

46K and even the pads are still in decent shape. Have you had problems warping rotors on other vehicles? I find that my wife warps them on every car whe has ever owned, seems to unintentionally ride the brake.

Front and back rotors warpped at 20,000 miles. caused bad steering wheel vibration and wheel shake at 70 mph. Had at the dealer 4 times and finally had them check the rotors...they were warpped. turned the fronts and steering wheel vibration went away....still have warpped rears...but rear brakes are only at 80% pad. Cost me $280 for front rotor turn and new pads.

Just food for thought..... and i`m no expert.... BUT,
when slowing down, or coming to a stop light, do you guys still hold your foot on the brake pedal while you are completly stopped...???? This will cook your brake rotors very quickly. When hot brakepads are kept pressed against the rotors, you`ll heat up that particular spot on the rotors. Then the rotor swells from the heated area, warp`s the rotor(s) due to that area being over heated. It dosent take very long for the rotors to become out of round from the heat. We ALL pretty much know, that the quality today isnt that great, so rotors are going to suffer severely. Rotors today are thinner to save weight, and the metals they`re made from aren`t that good either. Change driving habits, or step up to a better grade of brake parts, and if not, you will continue to eat rotors. I use to warp rotors all the time until i quit holding my foot on the brake pedal while stopped. I stop with alot of room in front of me and let my truck inch forward so i dont leave the brake pads to burn into the rotors. Ever since doing this, i havent warped a rotor since. Dunno, see if that works for you, it definatley worked for me. Everyones driving habits and driving area`s are different, just have to figure out what works for you without using the brake pedal more than nessesary. I find that i coast more to my stops, thats saved me tons of cash on future brake work.

With my daily driver, which is a manual, whenever possible I keep my foot off the brake and just let the car sit. Sometimes I'll pull the parking brake.

However, it's not possible to do that with an automatic tranny unless you keep shifting to neutral, which can't be that great for the transmission. So unless you stop with a huge gap in front of you, this is probably not going to work well...

Yea thats not going to work on auto's...whenever I let off my brakes my truck wants to go, there is no sitting still for me

But 9k miles so far and no issue's with brakes or rotors...but upgrades have been a thought in the back of my mind.

I've held the brake when I'm stopped in every one of my vehicles. I've never had any problems with warped rotors so I don't buy that story. I don't have any problems with my rotors on my 09 ram either and it has about 35,000 miles on it. Mostly highway driving, but still. Sounds like it's just because of his tires. This is just me, but if I had 37" tires, I wouldn't be running stock rotors and pads. This is why, they'll warp. Go with EBC Sport Rotors and the EBC Green Stuff or Yellow Stuff brake pads (my personal choice). That will give you a big improvement on your braking and it will help keep your rotors cool.
