Question for any Techs out there
Intake Air Temp Sensor question on 2011 Ram Hemi.
Upon removing the air temp sensor from my intake tube, I broke the small protective plastic piece that surrounds the actual sensor tip.
The sensor itself looks fine, it was just the plastic piece that protects the sensor tip. I reinstalled it and everything seems fine. No error codes or anything. It looks to me that the small piece that broke off is just to protect the sensor from being damaged. This is probably more important when the sensor is out of the tube because when its in the tube, nothing can hit it. I just want to make sure that the plastic piece doesn't have some other important function that isn't obvious. And if anyone knows what the replacement cost might be, just in case.
Thanks

Not sure how many will know the exact answer here, but if it is not functioning correctly you will get a check engine light soon and that would be the VERY first place I would go. When I put on my K&N CAI it said in the directions to be VERY careful removing that as it is hard to get out.
Based on part store websites... $20-$40. I think this is something you do not really need to get at the dealer, aftermarket should be fine.

I put an AFE intake on some months back and that thing was a PIA to get out of the stock air tube. I ended up wrapping it with some thin rope and had to have my brother hold the air tube and I pulled it straight out with some pliers, the thin rope protected it and gave us a lip for the pliers to pull against. I thought it would break for sure but we finally got it out. I can't see the plastic piece doing anything functionally, if no CEL, don't worry about it. Replace it if it really bugs you. I probably would have to replace it if it were me since it would bug the hell out of me.
The plastic piece you broke off is more than likely just as you thought a cover to protect the temp probe. As long as the temp probe itself is un-damaged you will be fine, this temp prob is similar to one that you would see on a multimeter attachment that reads temp's. From the own personal experience either these things work or they don't there is no in between so if it was harmed your check engine light would have come on by now.
