Default 5 or 6 speed auto trans?

When I bought my truck a year ago, my window sticker shows that I have a 5 speed automatic trans. When in drive, if I gear down one gear, it shows a 6..?? If i use Tow/Haul it won't go any higher than 5th gear, which seems to indicate there is a 6th gear. I know they certainly know what to print on the window sticker, just curious why some places it shows 5 speed and some other places that it's a 6 speed?

For 2012 it'll be marketed as a 6 spd.

its a 5 speed but the trans has the following gears 1st,2nd,2nd prime,3rd 4th and 5th.so depending how you look at it.it could be both, but according to dodge its a 5 speed because they do not count the 2nd prime gear, and if i'm not mistaken dodge will be going to a 8 speed in 2012

really so dodge isnt going with the zf 8hp 8 speed trans with deleting the 3.92 gears it would stand to reason they need to add gears to the trans to add towing capability and meet the cafe regs

A few months ago, on a live chat with the HEMI engineers, this question was asked. The engineers referred to the 545RFE transmission as a 6-speed. They stated that in the near future, Chrysler (Dodge/Ram), was going to be changing their literature, advertising, etc. to say that it is a 6-speed transmission.

It really is a 6 speed tranny - you just never use all 6 in any shift configuration.
