Default Trailer wiring question

I have the Ram 2500 4x4 with factory installed Trailer package with the 7 pin connector.

Which pin is the signal to disconnect the syurge brage solinoid for backing up?

I bought the 7 pin to 5 pin flat connector and still my brakes lock on the boat when trying to back up.

2011 Atlantic Trailer with dual axel dual disk brakes.

True surge brakes (correct me if I'm wrong) do not use wiring. They are a 2 part hitch that slides to compress the brake fluid against the pistons in the wheel.

Either you have:
A) Electric Brakes - You have a brake controller in the truck. This should NOT affect your ability to back up

B) Surge Brakes - Take a thick screwdriver (Or similar) and put it through an area that will stop the hitch from compressing. DO NOT FORGET TO TAKE IT OUT BEFORE DRIVING AWAY!

Default Dam Dodge Dealers!

I spent the day troubleshooting why the electric soilinoid would not activate to bypass the hydraylic brakes on the boat thrailer.

It is because the run off the same circiut that gets 12VDC when you put the shifter in reversese and the Backup light activate.

I have no Backup lights

Went to the auto parts store and bought new bulbs, still no backup lights.

got a meter and starter tracing the circut.

The shifter switch is working as I get a signal at the fuse block, the fuse is good and then Between the fuse and the lights. NOTHING.

As we are searching tru the truck my boy notices a 30 amp blown fuse in my glove box and a big BURN Mark on my Leather Drivers side seat.

No one smokes in my truck and I dont loan it out. $45,000 Truck and I keep it Cherry!

The only place it has bee was to LEE Dodge in Westbrook Maine for Electrical work when they took 3 months to fis the problem with the Alternator catching on fire 3 Freeking MONTHS. No Loaner truck.

I will NEVER Buy a vechical there.

so now I have no backup lights and can't back up my trailer.

Are ther any connector in the wiring harness that they could have screwed up?

By the price you quoted, I'm assuming you bought a pretty new 4th gen. Correct me if I am mistaken.

Moving this thread over there now...

After reading this again, I'd say you have electric brakes, with the wiring messed up. Likely someone connected your reverse lights to your brake power line... which also means when you are cruising down the road, you have no trailer brakes (eek!).

Take that beast down to a trailer shop and get them to sort you out. Its easy to set something up.. easier if you read the instructions... but to un-*uck something, that takes experience and skill. Someone elses life may depend on your brakes working!

the Triuck is a 2003. I bought it Brand new in OKC back then and the $45,000 is the winsow sticker price. Thats what they Exice tax me on every year.

That Not what I actually paid for the truck.

The trailer is a 2011 Atlantic Dula axcel with Hydraulic Disk brakes on both axcels. It has an Electric Bypass solinoid that releaves the pressure on the barakes so you can back up as the Hitch still slides into Surge mode when backing and compresses the Hyd piston.

The Backup lights on the truck activate the soilinoid. No lights, No solinoid.

I jummpperd out the backup light swich off the transmission and I have lights.

Pulled the swich from the transmission and it reads 480 Ohms when depressed. Not extreamly bad and I would have thought that it should have still conducted.

It does not.

Bought a new switch to the tune of $43 and checked the resistance. It is just about Zero.

So, Ill install it this week and see if it flies!

The Salt Air must have corroded the backup light switch.

Everything has to be covered in conductive grease or it corrodes.

Dodge should use better parts. But then again Chevy Sucks worse.
