Besides the hoseclamp trick, there are tailgate locks on the market. Keeping it locked while closed, locking the hinge, and adding a lockable cover, will make it much more difficult.

And, hire a night watchman to keep an eye on it....... preferrably, one with a gun....

The factory tailgate lock would be my first choice. Add the power lock mechanism too and it is super slick.

Definitly the power lock - best $100 I spent on the truck. Tailgate is locked or unlocked with the doors, never have to think about it.

Don't beat yourself up for making a claim, you might have saved a few bucks by buying one cheap and having it painted but to some is it worth the hassle... Lesson learned for you and an eye opener for others.
