Default 2010 Rear Differential Whine = WTF...????

Rather disappointed for what i spent to buy this truck and have loud diff whine, and getting louder...! (no whine when new)
Traveled thru many dodge forums, i`m seeing a few issues with 4th gen dodge rearends everywhere (not impressed with that)

Bought new, just turned a year old
2010 Hemi QC 4x4 Sport - 3.55 Open Gears - Whine Issue @ 23,000 miles
The rear diff is definatley where its comin from on mine
Terrible gear whine at 54mph on up
Changed diff lube, no difference
It IS definately getting worse...!!!

For those of you with the same exact truck:
Anyone else here having this same issue...??????
If you had it fixed, what was done to remedy the problem (???)
How many miles drivin since fixed, has the gear whine noise returned yet (???)

I hate to say it, but the quality of these vehicles today, really suck for how much we are all paying for them.

This could be the beginning of your pinion nut coming loose...just a hunch. If I were you, I'd drop the driveshaft get both wheels off the ground and check for pinion slack and a loose nut. Even easier, you should be able to just crawl underneath it with the ebrake on and in "neutral only" to check the slack by turning the shaft back and forth. If there's too much slack the nut could be coming loose.

Thanks for the info my friend, i`ll check it out today. I bet if it is loose, tightning it up surely wont fix it, prolly make it worse due to crushing the sleeve down more. Ther`s no good gear guys in my area, so i`m on my own to fix this. Built a few rear diff`s in my day, but its been a long time since i`ve worked on them. I`m sure it`ll all come back to me when i get it tore down. Yeah its still under warranty, but these dealerships today are just shade tree "bolt on" mechanics, i`m much better off doing the job myself being that i use to do this kind of work years ago. Only difference today is, i`m old and a little bit slower, well, A-L-O-T slower but the brain still works good, i think (?....lol lol lol....?)

Basicallyu had the same truck as u. Mine is an 09 and had this issue a month ago. I was travelling 4000 kms with a camper and about 2000 kms in my trip it started howling. Told myself she makes or it breaks, luckily I made it all the way to BC but it was getting louder by the hour. Brought the truck in to dealership and they said my diff was pooched. So my truck was in the shop for a MONTH getting new gears "456" put in. 3700 dollars later

Is it under warranty? Yes, take it in and have them fix it, thats why they provide warranties, it sucks but gets fixed for free and documented, I wouldn't put a finger on it, let dodge fix it, and yes I hope you have a good service dept. good luck, this happens to all manufacturers, sorry if I sound non sympathetic but you'll be okay, had this on my first 02 truck, was fixed and never a problem after.

Chrysler fixed gear whine on our Jeep Grand Cherokee a while back. Give them a chance to make it right.

As for how it happened, did you ever do any pulling with it (i.e. getting someone unstuck or pulling a tree stump; not towing a trailer)?

Why didn't they cover it under warranty? Very curious!

Hi Rob

no, my truck has never ever hauled, pulled, towed, anything ever, other than groceries.
I drive this truck very easy. Rarely does it ever see more than 60 miles per hour. I always do all my service work just before its due. If they dump me on the warranty, i`ll dump the truck and never buy another one. I dont really NEED a truck, its just that i liked the looks of the new 4th gen trucks so i bought one just to tool around in and do all my running around in the truck. I have a bad case of more money than brains sometimes, BUT none the less, i bought this truck to keep for a long time and its breaking down on me too fast. I`ve had alotta things that have gone wrong with it since buying it, but they aren`t as important as this rearend issue at this time. I`ve never ran to the dealer so many times with any of my other vehicles as much as i have with this truck. Really bums me out because i really like the truck, just cant deal with all the issues these 4 gen trucks seem to have. Anyone that says they dont have alot of issues with 4 gen dodge trucks, well then you better start reading more forums and internet complaints about dodge trucks then, cause thers ALOT of them out there. Yeah i know i know, they ALL got their problems, BUT they shouldnt have all these issues, for what we spend on them to buy them. If i only paid 5 or 10 grand for the truck, i wouldnt really be this annoyed.
