Default Throttle body cleaning at 27,000 miles

Last week the dealer fixed a transmission pan leak on my '09 ram with 27,000 miles. The took the pan off and refilled with fluid. While there, the adviser was aggressive in pushing throttle body service, fuel injector service and and decarbonization plus the plugs at 30,000 miles. The amount of money he was asking for was ridiculous. He quoted $315 out the door for the plugs and was writing down the other numbers when I told him I would wait till the truck had 30,000 miles and then consider it. My '02 vette had recently been pinging under hard acceleration and my other forum was recommending the decarbonization of the top end. Today, I took my '02 vette (67,000 mi) for the BG fuel system service and it made a big difference. Before I took the vette in, I cleaned the throttle body, seafomed it via the vacuum line and did the throttle body seafom (new product), drove it like I stole it and noticed a big improvement. Then had them do the BG service, and now the vette runs like new. Anyway, I was thinking that I better look at the throttle body of my ram and to my surprise, it was fairly gummed up. I did the throttle body cleaning and I still had some of the seafoam throttle body so I did that and drove it like crazy. Seems to idle a little smoother, I'll keep an eye on it. The point is that I was surprised the throttle body was so dirty at 27,000 miles.

I guess I had better check mine as well. Our milage is close, I have 28k on mine...tkanks for the tip!

I took the TB off when I was messin with a TB spacer. This was at 40k but I was surprised, it wasn't too bad at all, not much to clean. I think of I put a catch can on it would have been even better..

How does a catch can help with the throttle body? I can see maybe with the combustion side of things but not where the air enters the intake manifold. The gunk I found in the throttle body was right around where the butterfly valve sits to let the idle air in. I ran my finger over it and it was a gummy ring that was affecting the idle air.

Its because the catch can installs in the pcv line that runs to your throttlebody right behind the butterfly and that line is what let's the oil vapors into your intake.

What brand do you have? How much? If it's as good as advertized, then it should pay for itself in less cleanings. Have you eliminated/reduced the TB cleanings? How often do you empty it? I think some guy was emptying his once a week or so.

Moroso makes one with a drain that's around $150 as compared to ones without at about $120. And btw, I don't think you have to drain them every week unless you're racing it every day. But for each his own, he's probably just being a little over cautious or in his eyes...protecting his baby, lol!

I got one from billet technologies. Everyone has an opinion on which are the best but I always say that any brand of catch can is better than nothing at all. When you first install it then you should check it every week or two so that you can get an idea of how fast yours will fill up since every ones will be different. I empty mine every 1500 miles and there will be less than an eighth of a cup in it. I have not taken the time to pull my throttle body off to see how it looks yet so I can't say if it has eliminated the need to keep cleaning it.

Also I have noticed that my idle has smoothed out considerably. It no longer has that slight shake when it idles anymore and is smooth as silk like it was when I bought it.
