Old trick of mine for the smell. Get yourself a couple of those foam ear plugs. Shove them up a your nose. Pull them out when done. Or your going to have that smell in your nose for a long, long time.

At 18K, Dodge checked the fluids and said (in writting) they were ok. The warrenty states to have the fuilds checked or changed. Since I don't do any towing the shop said I was still good. I most likely will change them out at 24K or 30K.

My 2011 Ram 1500 has a drain plug at the bottom for the rear diff. This will make for easy fluid change.

dont know, but ford has "lifetime" oil in the rear and 100k mile in the front axle .... at least thats what my 04 said. i thought this 18k was crazy. i thought they changed it from 18k to a higher number after 09 and figured it was their loophole to void the lifetime warranty.

Whaddya think?
Service manual says 30ft lbs / 41 Nm
also service schedule says to check the diff fluids at 18K, not change them.
It (rear) needs to be 3 cm from the bottom of the fill hole and relatively clean. If so, move on til the next 18K.

Its really not dirty. Its strange looking cause the gray set up paint and lube that is used. Most all manufactures the diff fliud looks like that. Has for decades. Nothing to be worried about. No one was trying to hide anything by sending out those 18,000 mile suggestions6 then they stopped. Its cause their computer recommended service items isn't glitch free. In a perfect world they would get in contact every so many months suggesting maintance.

My previous truck, 2000 GMC with LSD had an initial 15k gear oil change requirement. I remember going to the shop to have it done and they looked at me as if I was crazy. I think if you have an LSD, it's a good idea to get it done to get all of the friction plates wear out of there.
