Reaching il filter
I guess it depends where you approach it from. I slide head first from the front of the truck and find it easy to get to. I also slide a gallon freezer bag over it when I remove it to catch the oil. First loosen the filter then put the bag over it and twist off. My truck is a CC 2WD, I don't know about the 4x4s

Compared to other vehicles I've had I thought the Ram's filter was pretty simple to get to. There is enough room around it to get a filter wrench on it, and it isn't a hassle to get the filter past any other parts to remove. I'm not fond of how the oil spills down on the frame and other components under it though. I may try the bag trick next time.

Thanks guys. I used to hate the oil all over also. It takes a little patience with the bag but I don't spill any oil when I do it. The trick with the bag is to make sure the bottom of the bag is touching the bottom of the filter. That means the sides are collapsed but as you loosen the filter the oil will get captured, once the filter is loose be careful you don't spill the oil.

have a 4x4 and I use a oil filter socket with a lonnng ext to loosen and put a 7 inch funnel and and let it drain, remove the filter and let it sit in the funnel to drain initially and then just remove.
