Star Case - Transmission noise - For those that are still looking for this info
Yeah, I think you're right, which is why I think some may have not answered the question set at the begining of this thread. The subject title already assumes or implies it's a transmission defect, not an engine speed/shift related symptom.
The condition that I have is so infrequent that I'm not sure it bothers me that much. I'm more disappointed in the stiffness of the horn button and the plastic creaks of some of the interior pieces in cold weather.
Thanks for the reply.
Best regards,
Dusty

Ok, back on topic now...lol
Hey guys, first post for me on the Forum. Wanted to start by saying a big thanks to all the contributors regarding the TC issue on these later model Rams. I purchased mine 3 months ago, super excited, always wanted a Ram. Then this damn noise we're all familiar will started up. Armed with the star case info from this site, I took a transmission tech from the dealership I bought it from out for a test drive to demonstrate the noise yesterday. They all know what its about, but ask them and they get pretty tight lipped. Needless to say I got a phonecall this morning letting me know the TC kit was on order, and my trucks is going in for the repair next week. Super bummed that with only 5000k on her she's already getting the tranny dropped. I feel like the dealerships are being deceitful. I mean, they know of the problem, but sell you the truck anyway. Sigh. So...for anybody thats got this problem and looking at getting the TC replaced, watch this space as I'll let you know accurately what the outcome is...next week.
Ok folks, got my truck back this evening after getting the TC replaced. I excitedly jumped in and took it for a spin on my favorite stretch of road where I'd been able to reliably produce the drone/grinding noise....GONE!! It shifts smoother, no shudders, the MDS is quieter when it engages. Super super happy. I'd go so far as to say it drives better than the day I drove it off the car lot when it was brand new.I am one of those uber picky people who can't stand noises with his vehicle, so when I say its gone, trust me, its gone. The dealership service manager later told me that they'd had numerous 1500's with this very problem, but had not been able to do anything for the customers as Chrysler had not been very helpful with info. Even 2 of the staff at the dealership had the same problem. He was seemingly impressed that i'd been able to find the star case info. Umm, yeah, 15 mins on the computer after googling it, thanks to this forum. Anyway, he says they'll be ordering in a bunch to fix this problem with several other customers in the area, so thats positive. Feel free to message me guys if you have any other questions. I know lots of you have this very problem, and I know how happy you'll be once you get this fix done!
Would you like me to give you an update every 100kms? You must have too much time on your hands...
no, you dont have to update anymore. Sorry to have bothered you.
Being that this is my own original post, i`m going to hi-jack it just long enough to agree with you about the horn button... man what the hell were those engineers smokin when they designed THAT peice of ****...! You practically need a sledge hammer to blow the dam horns in these trucks...!
Ok, back on topic now...lol

I have the same issue...LOL....I thought it was just me...try to give a little tap, no good...only wants to do long toots....
No big deal I guess but......just a quirk.
Never had it come from where the bulletin says but, I did have trans issues previously. I can't remember what the fix was but, whenever I had put the vehicle into reverse a grinding sound could be heard. The sound was similar to the sound produced by a manual transmission when you put it into the wrong gear. It started to occur after hearing that sound, which occured a good 30 seconds. Post sounds were about 4 seconds. Once they did the fix, it quit completely.
