Default 2012 Ram brake controller

Hi! I know it's been well covered for 2009-2010 models, but I just bought a 2012 1500 Quad Cab without the tow package. Installed a hitch from Uhaul for $125 and need a brake controller to tow my camper. Little did I know it was such an issue or I would have rethought my purchase.
Question is this: I only have the one grey connector under the dash. If I shell out the $220 for the controller from the dealer, can I make it work in this truck? Read about 8 pages worth of posts, but only became more confused with all of the year/month differences between '09-'10.

Someone made a nice .pdf file about buying a bunch of parts and building a harness, but can i be assured this will work with my 2012 before I buy all of this stuff? Still doesn't help me tow my trailer this weekend, but worth the trouble.

Just my opinion, buy the OEM brake controller, have the dealer install it. (2012 is likely different)
Your truck will have to be reflashed to accept it...thats worth everything NOT to have problems..!
If you have an issue later on, they have to fix it...i believe it comes with a 1yr warranty (parts & labor)
I have heard of, and seen, first hand nightmares with aftermarket, inspite of what anyone tells you in here.
Vehicles today are VERY touchy with electronic`s, dont take the chance on aftermarket electronic items.

Dealer wouldn't install it. I installed it in the truck yesterday by making my own 3-wire harness that was missing. Hooked it up to the trailer last night and it works like a champ. I don't have the EVIC display, so no need for a software upgrade.

Had this same issue while trying to purchase mine this week. They didn't have the truck I wanted with the Trailer Brake package on it. According to the head Technician, some trucks have 2 gray wire/plugs under the dash, some have only 1. No logic or reason to it, but if the truck only has 1, the factory brake system won't work and they won't install it. Says the only way to know is to physically look. I'm just gonna make my own harness, but if you're not comfortable doing that, my advice would be to take it to camper retailer and have them do it. They do this type thing everyday.
