Default Help changing fluids, (diffs, etc)

Alright guys, shortly here in a few months I'm going to be changing the fluids in my truck.

Im just looking here for some tips tricks etc. I was planning on pulling the covers to make sure I get all of if any junk out.

So anyone recommend some fancy gaskets? Or get from the dealer?

Also , I'll have about 36k on the truck.

Which ones should I change the fluid out?

Rear diff, front diff, transfer case, trans?

I'm also planning on amsoil....

Thanks

I'd do them all except for the tranny. I'm going to have my tranny done with the fluid exchanger so they get it all instead of just 5 - 6 quarts. I think next time I do my axle (2wd) is to buy a real gasket instead of the RTV. I hate cleaning the RTV off the cover and pumpking and then waiting for an hour for the new stuff to set before tightening it. I did have the tranny pan pulled by my dealer under warranty cause it had a leak, if I remember correctly they used 6 quarts ( I'm too lazy to go look at the shop order). That was at around 27000 miles and I'm at 34,000 right now. The owners manual says to change it at 60,000 if used for taxi, freq towing, etc.

Without looking at the manual, the diffs etc are supposed to be at 30k right? I'm not worried for my own truck because it doesn't get hard use, it will most likely have about 36k on it when I do it in a few months....

The interval for the trans and transfer case is 60,000 miles if used as taxi, off road or frequent towing, so you're well ahead of the game here. The front and rear axles are to be inspected at 18,000 mile intervals (per my '09 guide) if light use but changed if used heavily. I like to get the fluid changed right away on the axles and get a good look at the gears. I change mine at every 18,000 miles cause I tow on occasion. The front axle is probably not getting much use so you can probably do that one every other time as the rear (change fluids that is)

Did front & rear diff along with transfer case just before 50,000 miles. Old stuff with still pretty clean. Went with Royal Purple this time so I can go longer maybe 100,000.

I will have the tranny done this coming summer and sucked out as well then topped off.

Permatex gasket maker, (silver stuff) designed for differentials. Got it at Pep boys. Very similar to the factory stuff.

What about the torque specs on the bolts for the pumpkin, is there a certain torque to follow or doesn't really matter.

If i remember right, you`ll torque the bolts (criss crossing pattern) @ 25ftlbs

Ther is no gasket. Use the Permatex "Hi-Temp" RTV silicone sealant (orange color, same as stock OEM sealant)
