I had a flat tire a couple of months ago while driving, my low tire pressure warning chimed and my tire was flat instantly, when I took it in to be repaired I was told there was no problem with the tire but the valve had fallen thru to the inside of the rim, they replace the valve with an updated rubber one as I had the metal valves on all 4 wheels and thought nothing of it, yesterday driving on the highway my low pressure chime went off and by the time I got to the shoulder I had another flat on a different wheel, I looked right away for the valve and it was not there, went to my dealer today told him my story asked if there was a problem with these valves and he said no,the reason they replaced the metal valves with the updated rubber was because of a corrosion problem in the stems, upon inspecting the other 2 wheels he discovered that the outside retaining nut on both rims to be cracked and missing part of the nut, I am pleased to say that my dealer is replacing the 3 valves under warranty with the updated rubber ones, my unit is an 09 check your tire valves for defect retaining nuts there must be a corrosion problem with them.

 

You are talking about the valve air stem you air the tire up with ?

Yes, that is what he is talking about, and yes there is a sensor in the wheel, that is how it transmits data on pressure to your truck.

I will take a look at mine this week. I do know the issue/RRT for them was related to the metal caps and metal stems rusting together and the fix back then was to put a plastic cap on it, my 09 came from the factory with plastic caps with metal stems as it was a late production 09. Maybe there are more issues with them over time.

 

Out of curiosity, how many miles have you got and are they the original tires or have they been replaced?

The reason I ask is that when they replace the tires you are supposed to install a new TPMS "kit" when you reinstall the sensor - new nut o-ring and valve cap

 

I had the same problem on mine from the factory. The metal retaining nut that holds that valve stem in place was too tight on 3 wheels and cracked the nut. Had one of the nuts fall off going down the road and it allowed the valve stem to fall into the tire letting all the air out instantly.

The tires are original and have 44000 kms on them, I have never had them dismounted ,my dealer informed me that the nuts were corroded and even thou my warranty is up he is covering them , the only draw back to this episode is I had to replace the tire as it was cut from the wheel rim 20in.he sold me the tire at his cost.

 

Sounds like a safety recall in the making.

 

With like 20k km's which is nothing I had my rims replaced by the dealer and 2 of the sensors had to be replaced...they were defective meaning they broke them, they are very brittle and cheap, if you replace them you should replace them with an aftermarket tpms and valve if you are paying for it if the dealer is paying -warranty then let them replace them. Mine were warranty but I plan on buying 2 sets since I need some for my winter rims kinda a pain that warning light on all winter.
Hey Ramulak you are talking some truth there but there is a recommendation that you rebuild the valve part everytime you change tires since they corrode. That is why I am going after market , I cant remember but I believe the company that makes them is Orange or something. I will have to search it again. Good luck

Just noticed on my truck that the right front valvestem nut is cracked allmost all the way down, and these are not the original nuts. Guess I'll be going to the dealer to get that fixed today.

 

Took it in to the local tire shop so that I could get it done today. Turned out that the steel valvestem was rusting badly and that is what actually split the nut.
