Default Name that noise...

I have an 09 Ram Sport and I have had periodic electrical issues for the last 2 or 3 years. My most recent issue is an ABS / BAS / slippery road light (happened 1 1/2 years ago too) which has been on for 2 days. NOW there is a loud clicking noise under the dashboard when I turn the engine off. The clicking goes off after a few minutes, but I'm stumped.

I cant get the truck in to the shop until Monday....

Immediately after ignition turn-off one or more air dampers under the dash automatically close (using vehicle vacuum). Most likely a clicking noise during this same time period is a stuck or dragging damper.

Thanks Capn! That could very well be the issue! I am assuming it's just a coincidence that it began right after the ABS light came on.

If it's directly in front of the driver, or to the left, it could certainly be your ABS system malfunctioning, and it will make strange and loud noises.
( I'm not sure I'd even drive it. )
Try disabling traction control and see if it changes (there's a button for that).
The ABS light being illuminated means it is trying to correct a loss of traction by applying whatever braking it needs to,
on whatever corner(s) the computer determines.
If it IS malfunctioning and trying to apply your brakes, you could be dragging brakes.
Driving like that can do bad things.

GO directly to a dealer for repair.

Man I hope that's not the problem! The noise I have is directly behind the center console, behind the HVAC controls. I just went out and turned the key to accessory and the popping noise started up again. Its so loud that I can hear it outside of the truck, with the windows closed!

You may have a bad wheel speed sensor tripping the lights.

You mean 'in front of' the center console don't you, i.e., coming from under the dash?

The vacuum reservoir contains enough vacuum to operate the HVAC dampers several times. There is a vacuum line running through the firewall that you could pull off (if you could find it) and try the "turning the key to the accy position" again to see if the noise is still there. With the vacuum line disconnected the dampers should not operate.

The ABS light coming on could just be a coincidence, but that warning light is telling you that brake service is needed immediately, so I might be a bit inclined to leave the truck parked until I could get it in to the dealership.

Turned out to be two separate issues. The ABS light was the result of a broken wire between the rear wheels and the computer. The noise from inside the dash, was the HVAC damper. It had apparently gotten stuck and could not switch from vent to floor.

The dealership was able to fix both issues without replacing any parts.... still took 4-5 hours. Gunna be expensive!

Thanks everyone for the replies! This website has saved me a ton of headaches with my past few trucks!

Holy smokes! That does seem like an awful high labor charge, though sometimes diagnosing (i.e., finding the broken wire) takes time. Still 4~5 hrs seems excessive. I'd be talking to the svc. manager to try & negotiate a little "customer good will" especially on something as new as an '09 regardless of miles. It never hurts to ask for dispensation.

However, it's experiences like yours that make me glad that I bought the full-blown ext'd warranty (covers everything except routine maint items). I had my previous ('97) Ram for almost 15 years. I'm optimistic my current one will last me at least as long.

Did you pass the 7 years 70,000 miles yet. Should be under the bumper to bumper warranty.
