Dodge Ram 1500 Rust Issues
Man I 'm glad I have that lifetime power train warranty. That way I can use it in a go cart after my body rusts away to powder in a few years ..... or months?
Seriously though. I have an '09 and no rust issues at all so far. Whenever I buy a new truck I always spend the first few days of it's life spraying the bottom of the truck. For a couple hundred bucks worth of paint it sure saves the headache of dealing with rust. Plus all the guys at the Dodge shop love to see a clean truck come in to work on.

One way to stop rest is Carthotic Protection ..
Boats, and your hot water heater in your home use small Anodods that are Zink or Magneasium bars with two wires attatched to your steal object, creating a small electrical charge.
This application is ued on water mains to prevent rust from damaging cast iron pipe, basicly when thiers a small ectrical current passing threw a iron or steal object thiers no chance for rust to fourm, a zink or magneasim bar creats the small, mineute electrical charge that directs any rust atoms to the bars.
On water main applications, thease anodods are typicaly 50 lbs, but as a fourm of rust protection in car truck applications, a Anodod is less than 500 grams..

I get some on mine too, but it always seems to clean off. Seems like rail dust type rust, not sure why it seems to stick to these particular bumpers so bad.
Cathodic Protection on vehicles will not stop rust. If it was that simple every car and truck manufacturer would be using these system. Quite a few snake oil salesman offer vehicle based systems but it is an absolute scam if you understand the principles of corrosion. Cathodic protection works only if their is an electrolite that carries current between the galvanic anodes and the item to be protected. For boats, that electrolyte is salt water. For buried pipes, the electrolyte is moisture in the soil (and if it's a dry area the systems are not actually working) For a vehicle on land their is nothing. So the system cannot work.
Yesterday I spent a major part of my day going to several body shops getting estimate s to repair the rust now showing it's ugly presence. The lowest estimate was $3500.00. They want to replace the rt hand bed side and the two lft hd doors. Even though my Dakota has 142k on the odo, and the truck is 12 years old, other than the rust it looks like a fairly new vehicle. On my way home I noticed other Dodge pu trucks and other than two to three year old trucks have rust. Ti is a fairly common problem. I hate to think about legal action but has any one thought about a CLASS ACTION law suit???? Give me you thoughts

The surface rust is normal. If you want to cover it up though, check out POR 15. It's 50$ - 100$ a quart, but that quart goes a long way. It is also very messy. When you get it on your clothes, it won't come out. On your skin, you can't scrub it off. You have to wait to shed the skin on that area. Don't use it with a spray gun, you'll never be able to use that gun again. Use some cheap paint brushes that you can throw away after each paint session. You also don't need to strip the rust off of the area you're painting. Clean off any dirt or oil and get to painting. It actually doesn't spread very easily on bare metal. You'll need their metal prep for bare metal.
I've painting a large portion of a project '79 Camaro with the stuff. I did the entire underside, the trunk, the front subframe (inside and out) and any other parts I could get to. There is still a lot more to paint in it. I'm hoping this summer to try and start coating Hemrietta's underside in it as well.

New to the site and have been reading posts about rust issues. I recently noticed rust bubbles on both rear upper quarter panels about the size of a dime. I'm also noticing rust on the front chrome bumpers. I'm pretty disappointed because I love this truck (5.7L Crew Big Horn). I have an appointment at the dealership next week and they will take pictures and send it to Chrysler. I'll let you know where I get, but i'm not confident i'll get anywhere. Hard to believe a truck that is 3yrs old already having these types of issues. Other than this, the truck has been rock solid all around.
