Default Further update on lifters...

I took my Ram Hemi to another dealer (the dealer where I purchased the truck). My friend is in sales there and made an introduction to the service manager. They have confirmed the diagnosis of collapsed lifters, but are giving me a break on the parts and labour. Essentially doing it at their cost. I've bought 2 vehicles from this dealer and the service manager acknowledged my truck was a 2009 and just out of powertrain warranty. I told them to proceed with the work. Cost is still over $1,000.00

DodgeCA(Canada)Cares also contacted me via this board and a review of my posts. As of yesterday, they were waiting to hear back from the service manager. The lady from DodgeCares has PM'd me several times to follow up so that's encouraging. As noted, it seems clear there is some form of defect or misassembly...collapsed lifters on Hemis are almost unheard of. I advised the lady at DodgeCares that while I appreciate the efforts of the dealer, I feel Chrysler Canada should also step up and do something. The cost is more reasonable than the first estimate, but it's still a lot of money for a truck just out of warranty. I'm waiting to hear back and will continue to provide updates. I should have my truck back tomorrow.

Appreciate all the input from everybody. Great board.

Occasionally a manufacturer will comp the parts for a repair like this slightly out of warranty. That way you'd only have to pay labor to the dealer that does the work. I have a buddy in a Honda dealership and Honda does this quite a bit. Keep working with Chrysler to see if that outcome can be arranged.

The dealer stepped up, although the truck was just out of warranty, and did the repairs essentially at their cost. The service manager said he has "exchanged phone messages" with Chrysler Canada (DodgeCACares) and said they are waiting for a diagnostic report. Dealer is now waiting to speak with Chrysler Canada regarding the final resolution. Will post a detailed update when we get the response from Chrysler.

BullyT, I am living this issue now. They changed the lifters and my vechicle ran worse. At this time they are trying to trouble shoot the misfiring and popping noise. This week will be the third week they have had the vehicle trying to fix the issues they caused during while changing the lifters. I am making a journal on this to give to Chrysler Corporate. See my story below.

Did your vechicle have any of these issues after they replaced the lifters?

PS.. They originally quoted me $2000 to change the lifters. After a days negotiation I got them down to $1200 out the door.

2006 Dodge Durango 5.7 Hemi

On Wednesday 1/30/2013, I brought my car to Greenway Dodge to fix my ticking noise from my engine. Engine ran strong in all phases acceleration, idling and cruising both hot or cold. Talked with Aaron from Greenway dodge and he said the issue was bad lifters on both sides of the engine. He recommend to change only the lifters and that should fix the issue.

On Thursday 1/31/2013, Aaron called me to let me know they may have to change the cam shaft but the Senior Technician said the shaft was good and the lifters will work with the existing cam shaft. Aaron also said it would not be ready until Friday.

On Friday 2/1/2013, Aaron called and said the vehicle is ready to go. I picked it up late Friday around 6:30pm. When I picked it up I noticed the air bag light on both the drivers side and passenger side was on and would not go off. I went back in to notify Edwin so he could take a look at it. He could not figure it out so I said don't worry about it I will bring it by next week. On the way home I noticed when cruising around 35 to 45 miles per hour there was a distinct popping noise from the engine. Now this popping noise occurred while drive on a smooth roadway surface with no bumps. Halfway home I pulled over to call Greenway back but did not get an answer because they were closed. I proceeded home and parked the vehicle.

On Saturday 2/2/2013, I called Greenway to let them know there was a problem and they said to bring it in. I told them that I was worried it would damage the engine. They told me no problem they would pay for towing service to pick it up. The AAA Towing came buy and picked up the vehicle. Around 3:30pm I got call from Aaron saying the technicians that did the work and him took it for a ride and they believe this was due to steering problem(ball joints, tie rods etc..), but they were not sure. I told Aaron that it could not possibly be a steering issue because the sound never happened when hitting a bump in the road. It only pops when cruising around 35 to 45 mph on a smooth roadway surface. His diagnose bothered me so much my wife and I came down to talk to Aaron and test drive the vehicle. When Aaron brought the vehicle around he said the engine light came. We still decided to go on a test drive. Aaron, Edwin, my wife and I went on a test ride. All window were up and no air or radio was on so we could here the pop. When driving out of Greenway there are two speed bumps that I purposely drove over faster than normal so if there was a suspension problem up front that you would hear the noise. When going over the bumps we all confirmed no noise. Next, while pulling on to SR 50 the vehicle started sputtering and idling rough. I pulled over to see if it was going stabilize. It did so we proceed to go on SR 417 so we could cruise at 35 to 45 mph on a new roadway that is smooth as silk. On this drive we all heard the popping noise. Edwin, Aaron, my wife and I all confirmed the popping. I asked Edwin and Aaron if they heard this and they confirmed. These noises happened on a smooth road with no bumps or holes. We later returned to Greenway to drop the vehicle off. I told Aaron that this is not a suspension problem/noise and do not touch my suspension. I told him the popping noise is related to the work performed on my vehicle. Right now I told him to fix the engine that has a popping noise and runs rough. Also find out why the engine and air bag lights are on. Aaron said he would have another technician look at the issue and call me on Monday.

On Friday 2/8/13, Here we are a week later and my vehicle is still at the Green Way Dodge dealer. I have been moved up to the head leader of the Service Center at Dodge Greenway Dealer in Orlando Florida. I have been pushed up to the Lead Person in the Service Department. Tom has said all week he has his two best mechanics on my car. Tom says the engine light in my car is saying a miss fire but they cannot figure the issue out. They have been elimnating parts that could be the issue but we still have this mysterious popping in the motor. Right now they say I should be happy they are trying to fix the issue by replacing old parts with new ones. example spark plugs, timing tentioner etc.. and I should be happy they are trying to fix it and replacing parts and not charging me...My response is non of this was happing before I brought it in....I came in to get my lifters changed. My engine ran stronger no miss firing or popping was happing before I brought it in just the loud ticking noise that they fixed by replacing the lifters. My response is all the problems I have now is because of there lack of QC control there repair. Tomorrow I will be asking for a vehicle...It has been two weeks and I don't have my vehicle running... I told Tom to cut his losses and put a brand new engine in the care because officially you two best Mechanics cannot figure it out. Cut your loses. Tom still wants to try and figure it out. I am OK with that but I need a vehicle to live my life. I need a car or my vehicle period. There solution is I should be happy they are not charging me and they are trouble shooting replacing parts and not charging me...Bottom Line is they caused this issue and it is not my problem it threes...

I am going to send a complaint to Chrysler tomorrow.....My question is how long should I be patient?

Default Dodge Dealer Lost..

Bully T Thanks for the Help if your friend can help my number is 407 234 1322. I am attaching my lifters they gave me back. The lifter on the right was the one that was ticking. The roller is worn down to a nub. How does this happen with a vehicle with 112kmiles and change the oil every 3000k with the correct oil??

Thanks For the Help

I had the lifters replaced at 111,000 km and I'm now at 123,000 km with no issues. I didn't have any of the symptoms you have reported. They replaced the lifters and one valve. Truck has run fine since...no check engine, no knocking or ticking...no oil consumption...running fine. I'm not sure what is causing the issues you're having, but if the truck was fine before they changed the lifters and immediately after it started running rough and your engine light came on (among other things) then it doesn't take Einstein to figure out they did something while they had the top end apart.

From what I understand, lifter problems are rare on these trucks and perhaps the mechanic(s) that worked on your truck didn't have a lot of direct experience. At the same time, it could be something simple...I wish I could help and give you an idea what that might be.

Drama Still Continues:

On Monday 2/11/2013- Talked with a Chrysler rep and they listen to my story but bottom line was there was nothing they could do because the vehicle is out of warranty. He put me on hold and called the dealer. He talked to Tom and got the same old story I was getting. They are working with me and I will not be charged but they still trying to eliminate the problem. I asked the rep if he could escalated the issue but he said there was nothing they could do.

On Thursday 2/14/2013, Well I waited around patiently for another 3 days and received no updates so I called around 5:30pm but Tom has gone home for the day. I did speak with Aaron to and he gave me the same old story they are chasing the problem by replacing parts and doing test. I had asked to confirmed it again with him that they do not intend to charge me for any of this work. At this time they still have the popping and misfiring going on. Still no answer. I told Aaron to let Tom know that I would be in around 10:00am to discuss the status and options from here.

THE SAGA IS OVER>>>>>>

On Thursday 2/21/2013, Well the saga is over. They finally put my Durango back together correctly. The misfiring and valve popping noise is a thing of the past. I talked to the Master Mechanic the next day (Tom) and he said the issue was adjusting the valve or valve that had the bad lifter. He thinks the old lifter was worn down so much that when the new lifter was installed it may have caused the sticking of the valve. The popping I was hearing when driving 35 to 45 mph was the valve. I know this because I visited the shop last Friday and Tom took me back to show status of the vehicle. Both heads were off and sitting on the bench. He pulled one of the valves back and let it pop back and that was the exact sound I heard when driving. Tom also admitted the first technician that did the job was on the "C TEAM" , but the technician that got it write was "A TEAM". I did get some extra parts and services (Fuel Injectors Flush, Spark Plugs, Tentioner and carbon cleaner on head). Another issue that was discovered with the original job was some issues with using the wrong torque.
