Why does my AC recirculate even when it is not selected?
Mine clearly switches to recirculate with no indicator light. If I press it, nothing changes other than the light turns on, if I turn it off the light goes off and it keeps recirculating ...until the car gets really cold or randomly decides it has recirculated enough.
This is my experience with a '12 express with basic AC controls. But what DodgeCares said makes a lot of sense to me now. I doubt it is worth the time looking deeper into it.

Just bought a new 2013 Ram 1500 Big Horn. I am getting the exact same results including the light NOT illuminating even though it is in recirculation mode. If I press the recirculation button, the light comes on but I can't identify a change in the air output. If I press the recirculation button again, the light goes off and the sound drops similar to every other vehicle I have owned does when leaving recirculation mode.
Glad to hear this is normal if odd.
BTW, here is a picture of the new RAM.

In my 2013 Outdoorsman, the AC will kick in when the truck is in fan mode (AC is off). I notice it because the air suddenly gets a lot colder and you can hear the compressor cycle - the dealer had never heard of it before.
Odd behavior indeed. If I did not smoke it would not be an issue at all. But I am a vile smoker, and it makes the cab stinky because no draft from the window cracked.
I am now smoking a vapor unit to help keep the cab more sweet smelling. Cuts down on me lighting up.
