Default 2013 Ram - NEW oil filter

I was a little shocked today when I crawled under my new 2013 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn with 5.7L. I was looking at the filter and thought it looked very small compared to the Mopar filter on previous 5.7L so I wrote down the numbers and did some checking.

Ram changed the filters on the 2013 as they are now 04892339AA which is a much smaller filter than the 4884899AB which is on most 2009 to 2013 Rams. And no, they don't sell the new filter at Walmart!!!

I'm curious how well the filtration will be on a smaller filter...more money, smaller filter. They'll be packing me in a 5 gallon bucket to bury me in at this rate...caskets will be too expensive.

Yes, the new filter was confirmed by my local Dodge dealer. I picked it up for $8.25 plus tax. He said it is the same as used in the Avenger, Jeep Patriot, Dodge Dart and other smaller vehicles...I know the stunned look on my face amused him as I was sure he was full of crap. Suddenly he turned his monitor around to show me...I was still stunned...and unimpressed.

Then when I got home I laid under my Ram and was stunned again to see such a small filter...then again, when you look at the drop in cartridge filter of the 3.6L Pentastar, it's not that big either. I guess my wife has been right all along...size really doesn't matter!

I have not done the research yet but you may be able to find a filter off another make or model that will hold close to a quart of oil. You just have to merry the thread pattern and the seat. Good hunting

Who cares how much oil it holds, as long as there is enough filter media to not restrict the flow then it'll be fine.

I'm not an engineer thus I won't pretend to think I know whether the filter is adequate for the engine...it's just surprising to see the same engine Chrysler Corp has used for years to now have a much smaller filter.

The seat and threads are much smaller than the filter on my 2013 Charger R/T with the exact same engine (yes I own both). I just found it odd they put a smaller filter on the trucks which are known for towing and the fact Walmart doesn't carry it yet...will be interesting to see if Ram holds onto these filters and doesn't let them be sold by Walmart, etc.

LOL - walmart having a car part for a brand new car is not exactly a good benchmark. Quick check at an actual auto parts store (Oreilly) shows that they are readily available.

just some info for those looking for the filter at wally world, if it is the same filter that they use in the dart and avenger than its a fram 10060 filter, those who dont want the fram filter just have an auto parts store cross reference the filter to others

The only reason I shop at Walmart for the filter is because I can get genuine Mopar filters...I NEVER opt for Fram or anything else except perhaps a Wix if I'm in a pinch.

As for the comments from old jeep, he can keep 'em to himself as I NEVER take a new truck to a dealer to have their 16 year old kids experiment with changing the oil on a $40,000+ truck. I've done them myself for over 40 years and don't plan on wasting money at the dealership or going there to simply buy a filter. O'Reilly or Autozone would be fine but they don't carry the genuine Mopar filter nor will I waste money on anything else they sell.

AGREED...!!!!!! 100%...!!!!
You an i are in pretty much in the same scenario, i NEVER let a dealer touch my vehicles, especially when i can avoid it... they always end up worse when "they" touch it. I do all my own work from headlights to the tail lights. I`ve even taken care of most of the warranty items on MY OWN dime just so i wont have to let the dealerships touch it. I trust my work, ther`s, not so much. At least i KNOW its getting done RIGHT the FIRST time, if i, do it.

Ok, let the oil filter wars begin... only because we KNOW how much some of you in here hate on MOPAR oil filters...lol.
