Which would bring us right back to square one... improper "FIX" procedure = a 2nd recall to fix the 1st recall.

Don't know. It'll be interesting to see what the fix is, but my truck isn't involved. I bought mine in May of 2009 so my build date couldn't fall in the range.

Interesting
Mine is a 10/22/2008 build date which I purchased 2/2009. It is in the recall. The purchase is just a few month before yours.

For the longest time mine did not show up has having a recall. A month ago I got the letter and it shows up when I query Chryslers data base.

I would think yours is also in the recall.

As i understand it, a few of the earlier 2009 trucks came with the AAM axles, if yours did, thats likely the reason you didnt get a recall notice. (you`re one of the lucky ones, your AAM is a far better axle than the junk ZF axle) If my information is correct, somewhere during early almost into mid year 09 they went to the ZF axles. The ZF axles are the ones being recalled.

Thats weird, yours shouldnt even have the ZF axle in it if it was built that early. Should be the AAM axle. Dunno, maybe my source of info is wrong... or maybe chrysler screwed up as usual and they`re recalling more than they need to.

Interesting, but I did receive the notice and it now pops up on the owner site. You may remember or not, but I had to have the rear end rebuilt at 32,000 miles. Pinion bearing was going out. Didn't loose the drive shaft or and it didn't seize up. I started to notice a noise from the rear. Took it in, no hassles, the dealer covered it under warranty.

LU229 it Looks like you are correct if we go by the recall info. Mine was built Nov 08 and I am not on the recall list. Could they have used both the AAM and ZF at the same time? Would you know how I could identify my rear axle (AAM or ZF)by inspection? Thanks.

Safety Recall M34 / NHTSA 12V-474
Rear Axle Pinion Nut
2009 - 2010 (DS) RAM Truck (1500 series)

NOTE: This recall applies only to the above vehicles equipped with a 9.25 rear axle (sales code DRB) built from July 01, 2009 through November 30, 2009 (MDH 070106 through 113023).

From what I have seen on the internet, the 1500 rear diff cover for the AAM axle has 14 bolts while the ZF diff cover has 10 bolts. Is this correct?

I have a 12/08 build date and received a recall notice two months ago. This open recall is now also noted on all the dealer mailers for service deals i always get. I also have had the pinion seal replaced, then the pinion and carrier bearings under the lifete powertrain warranty. Have 90k on truck now but have not brought in for service yet for this.

Could be, I'll have to take a look and see which one it is. I've got 3.21's, wouldn't surprise me if the recall is also ratio specific too.

I`m not 100% certain when they actually switched, but i am pretty sure it was somewhere within early 2009. You might also have to concider whether your truck was built in mexico or USA built as well. Chrysler is the only one that is going to know the exact dates and when they switched. I guess you could ask a buddy if you could look at his 07 or 08 ram truck rear differential and see if you can tell the difference between the two. My brother has a third gen, i`ll see him in the next few days, i`ll look at his and see if i can see anything different between his truck and mine as far as visual inspection goes (mine is a 4th gen 2010). Dont hold me to this, but i think the ring gear is stamped with the manufacture`s name on them.
