Default Thinking about buying a 2012 Outdoorsman

I am looking to purchase a Certified Pre Owned Ram 1500 Outdoorsman, but wanted to reach out to this community. I figure its finally time to retire my old 2nd gen ram.

The sticker says $29000. It is a 2012 with 13,000 miles. It is a 5.7 Hemi, with the standard SLT package, and also has onboard NAV. There are a few small body dings in the bumper, and a scuff on both passenger tires. Aside from that, it is clean as can be.

  1. I really want the Rambox storage for my rifles/ fishing poles, but its not mandatory. This truck lacks that - can that be added by the factory after the fact?
  2. What are some of the differences between the Outdoorsman and the standard Ram 1500's or another package like Tradesman, etc.
  3. Is there anything specific I should look out for that would be common problems with this model/gen? Its a 2012 with hardly any miles, but I still want to be cautious.
  4. Does the price seem fair? I tried pricing it on TMV, but I couldn't find something comperable.
  5. Is the Rambox worth it - or do you wish you had more bed space?
Thanks in advance!

I purchased the a 2013 Outdoorsman a month ago. The outdoorsman is supposed to have extra cooling for the motor, extra cooling for the transmision, 17" wheels with load range E tires, a 3.92 rear end and a towing capacity of 10,500lbs. If I'm not mistaken, it also has skid plates underneath. I looked at the ram box, but didn't want to pay the extra money for it. I was really sold on the towing capacity for towing a travel trailer. Supposedly the grey stripe on the bottom is scratch resistant. Not so sure about that. Even with the gain in towing capacity, the suspension is still soft. I'm sure I'm going to have to do something about it.

you cant just add the ram box later, unless you want to swamp out beds, which is gonna cost you alot. the ram box is something you do from that start. get the truck you want right off the bat. do it right the first time, you dont want regrets, and money spending later. trust me.

consider the truck 2 years old, as the 14's will be out shortly if there not already. I bought my truck for 34 in 2010. I think they can go down a little. New bumper is 2-400 on ebay. scuffs on the tires? its a truck.

I finally put a toolbox in my bed. The rambox was the coolest thing in the world to be when it came out. Then I saw it in person and was like, "you've got to be kidding me". you've got enough bed to slide a sheet of plywood or drywall and thats it.

Most guys on here dont even use their trucks for what they're meant for. If your not going to be using your bed for work, I wouldnt sweat the tiny bed.

As far as I know, the only thing special about the outdoorsman, is rear gears and heavy duty shocks for 4x4 models

The rambox is a no-go for me. It limits my ability to load our quad and dirtbike.

I ended up buying it. Its a very nice truck. They went down to 27,000. I also got them to heavily discount a spray in bed liner ($300), so I can yank out this plastic one and resell it. In the end, I'm happy - I couldn't even find another outdoorsman in my area - dodge had some special lease event going, and they cleared out all the inventory.

I was also set on the outdoorsman for the upgraded rear end and the shocks. After seeing another rambox on a showroom model - I decided that i was buying a truck with a bed to haul things - potentially, big things.

And the "CARFAX" report said what...??? You did check into that i hope.
Did they give you any kind of warranty... a loaner car in the agreement too...?

it is a 2012 - i get the balance of the bumper to bumper factory warranty.
no loaner car - didn't even cross my mind - isnt that standard with a car covered by factory warranty?
good carfax

I got it pretty far under blue book and for less than everywhere else I priced - so I'm satisfied.

I know - I wasn't sure if it was something the dealer could do as part of an "add-on" package type thing.

I ended up not wanting it in the end - made the bed too small.

The 14's will not be out until Sept. They already stopped building 13's, because I considered having a new truck built to my needs - but I didn't want to wait 2-3 months for it.

The bumper isn't worth replacing. The scuff are minor, and the dents are tiny little indents on the bumper and the paint isn't even scuffed. You'd have to look for them to find them. It was just something else I used to fight for a lower price.

I can't wait to get the spray in bed liner. The plastic liner is nice, but with as much as I'm going to use this truck, I can't do anything less than spray in just to keep the paint on the bed as solid as possible.
