2011 ram 1500 gearbox issue
Hi first and foremost im Dan from sweden totally new to this forum, my english might not be correct all the time but ill try my best to be as specific and understandable at all time.
Ive bought an 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 from USA.
Its equipped with 4x4, 4.7L flexifuel engine and an 5speed automatic gearbox (dont know the correct name for that one)
My problem is that it somehow has got water into the automatic gear box.
I have started it and let it heat up drained the oil and refilled it and then repeated that, the third time i also swapped the both oilfilters in the automatic gearbox.
After that i went for a test run for about 3 kilometers, first i went i lower speeds around 20mph and it did seem to work properly, little bit harsh when it shifted but otherswise OK. I hit the freeway after around 2.5 kilometers of driving to get up into little higher speeds, when i hit about maybe 40MPH it shifted and then stopped runnig forward, the engine was running but it was like it stopped pulling like if the gearbox was in neutral.
So thats kind of the issue, what should i do to get all of the water out of the gear box?
If thats even an big issue?
Thankful for all kind of help.
Sincerely Dan from sweden.

Good luck, I hope you can get it straightened out.
Dan,
unless we have an idea how much water got in there and how & why it got there, not going to get much help here. All you`ll have from here is everyone investigating and asking more questions at you. Tell us more on how this came about and how much water got in it.
Makes me wonder what else has water in it. I will have to say though, i wouldnt be starting it up and pushing the water throughout the whole transmission. Water is heavier than oil, the water would have settled to the bottom of the transmission pan.

The car has been in NJ or was it NY area when the latest of all hurricanes invaded that area.
i don't know how much water that has entered the gear box but one thing is for sure that the gear box oil was not as red as its supposed to be, more like pink when i drained it for the first time. The third time that i drained it it was more red than pink but not as red as it was when i filled it in the gear box from the oil can.
An indication of how much water it might have been in the gear box is that the first time i drained it i got 2.19 Gallons (8.3 liters) and from what i understand your supposed to get around 1.64 Gallons (6.2 Liters) when you drain it for service (can anyone confirm that or deny?)
. So that makes it 0.53 Gallons (2 liters) of unidentified fluid, most likely water.
Anyhow i made the fourth oil change today and took it out for a test ride.
I rode about 3.72 miles on the roads in my small village from 18 MPH to 31MPH and it shifted thru first gear to third gear i believe.
Then i went on to the freeway in speed up to 44MPH for about 2.48 Miles before it stopped pull and just slipped in the gear box.
So if you sum that it will make that test ride little longer than the first one. Drained the oil again as soon as i got it hauled back to the work shop and the oil was looking better than the time before that. But it was still not as red as it was when i filled the gear box
Feel free to ask whatever whenever as i am in need of all help i can get
Sincerely Dan

Has anyone tried the Sun car Diagnostic tool?
im considering buying one since i have some service lamps flashing in the VDO
It should work since it says Chrysler -1996 year model and newer.

I could have placed a bet it was in a flood. I would not trust it until it was pulled and rebuilt or at least gone through. It’s hard to say if driving it that way damaged it but it’s safe to say it did not help. I would also look into the diff(s) and transfer case (if so equipped) because it’s very likely you have water in there too. Best of luck to you.

I was told on the other hand that the Transfer case is not either air vented, but please correct that also if its wrong.
But im going to swap oil in those too but my main priority right now is drain all water out of the gear box so it will work properly.
Im just curious if someone has been in the same situation as me?
If someone knows if its the water causing it to stop pulling forward or if its an electrical issue?
All help is help and all experience is good!
Sincerely

[QUOTE=nonisossose;3043753]Im pretty sure that the differentials does not have the same system that the gear box has, that makes it able to air vent itself like the gear box does. The differential is a closed house where nothing can get in and nothing can get out, correct me if im wrong thou.

At one time, the rear diff had a vent tube that went up on the chassis. My 78 Power Wagon has this and, after several submersions, water DID get in there and I lost the ring and pinion because of it. Now I could be wrong in assuming the new diffs are vented. Just a possibilty to check.

I am a little confused, are you in Sweden or in the U.S.?
Did you just recently purchase this truck or have you had it for for sometime?
Were you told it was in a hurricane or flood when you purchased it?
Did you purchase it from a dealer or private owner? A dealer will have a warranty.
Something to look at, did you use the proper transmission fluid when it was replaced?
