Default mpg glitch?

Dodge owner for years, just sold my 03 SLT quad cab and purchased a new 2013 hemi quad. Here's my question:
On the dash, can change the gauges to get average; current miles per gallon, etc. But what has me a little baffled, is around town, I get about 25-35 and yet on the xpressway I get 16??? Is there a glitch in the programming? Searched the forums and couldn't find anything listed (at least not on a 2013 model).
Also, I know it's not likely, but could the "overdrive" not be kicking on during highway travel? I couldn't find anything in the manual and the only thing I could find was a brief blurb that it's all automatic now and that when you hit a cruising speed and stay there for a period of time, it'll kick in automatically. There's no manual off/on anymore. But, I don't hear or feel anything different cruising along the xpressway. I even set the cruise just to see if it would do anything.
I've spent many years doing prototype powertrain development (1.5 years on the hemi 5.7 and 6.1), but this is a little odd to me. My average mpg is 16 and it should be around 20 (I know there's a give and take depending upon driving styles). Anybody else have any ideas, thoughts?

from what i read in the manual you have to reset the mpg to get the correct mileage but it is always averaging. if you drive around town it will be low so when you get to the highway you have to reset. if it is really low from a lot of city you have to reset it a couple of times to get it down to what it is really getting. it always starts from where it was before the reset.

I only 16mpg overall. '09 Hemi quad cab, 60,000miles Used to get 20 highway but that was when it was new. Now I'm lucky to get 18 on the highway at all even after I changed plugs.

Figured that out about the averaging. But what about when you set the gauge for "current" mileage? I was curious as to why it was reading 25-35 in town and yet I'm only getting 16 on the highway? That's pretty backwards, since that tells me either the software isn't reading correctly, or the overdrive isn't kicking on at all.

Yeah that don;t sound right. I mean in my Subaru imprezza on the highway if I lift off the pedal at all it zooms up to 99mpg but when I put my foot back into it goes down to 36mpg or so. Depends if I am going up or down hill. Same in town/back roads. So 16 shouldn't be right. Heck I have a long hill by me on the highway that goes for about 5 miles. I got my reading up to 75mpg.....LOL....

I can understand that Ramulak, but this truck literally has 300 miles on it, all of which I put there. Once the rings, etc. get broken in, yes, you lose gas mileage. My old SLT had 155k on it when it was sold, at start I got 21mpg on the highway. By the end it was getting around 14. So it was definitely due for a ring job. But this has me baffled. It'll jump when you are cruising along and take your foot off the pedal, but it's just odd that I should be getting by far better on the freeway than around town. That's just simple engineering/physics. So was just curious if anybody had heard of a problem with the software. I've since removed it from the dash, because it was driving me nuts lol

metric mileage would be 25 in town and 16 on the hwy. do you have the display in US or metric?

Okay, that's a little on the "i'm an idiot side"...of course it's in standard. lol
The irony to that is I live on the Detroit/Windsor border since my wife's family is Canadian and for the first time since picking up the truck I actually switched it over to metric when we drove over for a visit. But for the most part it's always been in US standard.

Sounds like a trip to the dealer to reflash the computer with some software is needed. Just curious what does it read when you place it in metric. maybe the US standard didn't take?

Actually, was just thinking that. I'll check and see if it changes or not. Like I said, first time I put it in metric was this past weekend. Even then, I didn't have the kpl listed on the console having removed it previously.
But ya, thinking maybe it needs to be re-flashed or maybe there is an update on the software they can drop in.
