Just got a slightly used 2013 Express Sport with 20" chrome clad wheels. Just washed it for the first time and found that the wheels are plastic hubcaps??? What's up with that? What's under the hubcap? They look good for being plastic and probably would have never known if I didn't own one. A little disappointed though.
Wait a year or two, the garbage chrome plating will be peeling right off from them. You will become ALOT less impressed with them. And they`re made in CHINA...!
Yup mine look like crap after 4 years. Anyone have a diy to take off the plastic caps and polish the alum rim underneath? That would be very helpful as the plastic caps are glued really well.
If you lived in an area where they pour the salt on the road, you would learn to appreciate them. My 2005 has them (20") and they still look like new. With aluminum they almost always clearcoat them. The salt corrodes the alum and the clear bubbles off.. looks like crap.
Where I live, they put more salt on the road (per lane mile) than anywhere else in the entire country... last winter, almost 90 tons/lane mile for the season.
HA. Read your post and was thinking the same here. Then I realized you were in MD also. They do love the salt

The clads are epoxied to the wheel... use a heat gun to soften the epoxy, clad pulls right off but DOES require a little effort.
Keep in mind, your clad wheel center caps will NOT fit back on the wheels... the hole is larger under the chrome clad covers.
Whats the best cleaner for these chrome clad wheels?
I've found that Mirror Glaze on a Mother's PowerBall works wonderfully on the plasti-chrome wheels. Use normal car washing soap and water on them first, or something like Simple Green, to make sure they are free of dust and dirt before using the PowerBall.
