Default RAM 1500, 5.7 Engine break in Miles

How many miles should be run on the factory oil before switching to a high quality synthetic engine oil?

Do you have an owners manual? It should state in that. I will move this to the 4th gen Ram section. Welcome to DF.

You'll get a hundred different answers... they are all opinions. Do what you feel best about. My opinion is that I leave the factory oil in a vehicle for about 1500 - 2500 miles and then switch to synthetic.

Or just change the oil per the manual and use the oil that the manual asks for. Use extra money not spent on fancy oil to pay down truck

3/100
I'm with OJ on the oil type. He's got several hundred thousand miles on his truck and mine has 85Kish. I did my first change at about 1500 miles b/c that's what I was taught. Other than that it's been by the book.

Mine only has 90K. I think it is CAPSFLOYD that you are thinking of

That's what I was thinking that 2500 should be enough. Just wasn't sure with new engines, I'm more used to the old 440's, 340's and 318's.

Thanks
Dan

Oldjeep:

Do you change oil when the computer yells at you to do so, or do you stick to your own intervals? I run about 8000 with the synthetic oil I use and I'm very comfortable with that. I'm pretty sure my longer intervals don't cost me much more than changing at the computer-prompted intervals with non-syn oil. I have an IS300 closing in on 300K miles that I treated this way from day 1, so I sleep well at night with my choices. As noted above, this is all personal preference and opinion so everyone will disagree about something when oil is discussed. Just doing my part...

I stick to a 5k(ish) interval depending on what I've been doing with the truck. When I was towing a car from MN to MT, I'd change it sooner. It is rare that I see the computer asking me to change the oil. Oil change costs me about $25 at the dealer (bought in bunches of 4)

Interesting about the lack of prompting. I get prompted before 5k miles most all the time. And my driving is pretty light duty. I spend under $40 for synth oil and a good filter so we're about on par. I just have fewer times to climb under the truck and get dirty each year this way.
