My 2013 truck switched from 4WD to 2WD on it's own!! ;(
I have a 2013 Ram 1500. There have been two times (in snow conditions) when I got in the truck and started it...and the selector **** was turned to 4 wheel drive lock...and I took off. Suddenly noticing that only my rear wheels were turning. When I looked at the dash area where you see the 4 wheel drive light on....well it wasn't!...but the **** WAS in the 4 wheel drive position! I had to switch the **** to 2 wheel drive and then back to the 4 wheel drive position, to get it to work! This has also happened to my son while driving his 2013 ram 1500! The Dealer here in Great Falls, Mt says they have not heard of any prior issues like this. Has anyone else experienced this problem?? Thanks, Dennis
If it only happens on start up then it is probably a safety feature so you don't drive around in 4wd on dry pavement and break something. I also have a 2013 ram sport, i will try leaving it in 4wd over night and see what happens on start up.
Well I have a 2009 and I just weent and tried it. Mine stays locked in 4WD lock and does not shift out. However I did not try it very long as I don;t need to explode my transfer case like the other guy did. which begs the question....Did you try switching to 4WD lock as you were moving and does it stay in lock. If so then maybe there is something not letting you leave it in 4WD when you park it overnight and then start it up to drive it the next morning? Don't know how the truck would know this on it's own though. Also if the dealer has not heard of this it probably isn't anything the truck is doing safety wise. Must be electrical. I'd let the dealer know about it though if it happens again......
I have a 2013 Ram Sport and mine did the same exact thing but only I was in 4WD Auto. I had been driving in 4WD Auto with light snow and it worked great. Left selector in 4WD Auto and when I got back in vehicle, noticed rear tires spinning and my 4WD selector light was off. Tried going to 4WD Lock but no luck. Went back to 2WD and then tried 4WD Auto and it worked good after that. I didn't take it in as it only happened that once.
Zoo, from the owners manual hidden among the fine print. They need to make them with BIG print soo we can see it........
For variable driving conditions, the 4WD AUTO mode can be used. In this mode, the front axle is engaged, but the vehicle's power is sent to the rear wheels. Four-wheel drive will be automatically engaged when the vehicle senses a loss of traction.
TNtech, thanks. Thing is, when the switch is in 4wd Auto, there's a light illuminated in the instrument panel telling you what position the switch is in except when in 2wd. What happened was the switch was in 4wd Auto but the light went out and 4wd wouldn't engage when the real wheels lost traction. The only way 4wd would engage was to switch back to 2wd and then to 4wd again. It only happened once but I'll be keeping an eye on it next time we get snow.
to begin i am not mechanically bright lol.... i had the same issue with my 13 ram sport. be in auto 4wd and i'd go in somewhere come back out and it would not be in 4wd auto anymore... dealership here put it on a computer and found a controlller would for a lack of better words reset itself and switch in the axle to 2wd even though the switch ws stll in auto4wd..... long story short they replaced the computer module about this time last week and i haven't had anymore issues

my 2010 does this all the time, most common when the selector is in 4auto.
after restarting the truck the selector (****) is still in 4auto but the 4lock indicator is on the dash by the gauges. when I try to drive away the drivetrain is in 2wd because the tires spin easily.
I correct it by cycling the **** back to 2wd and then back to 4auto and things work properly.
this first happened about a year ago, and has been getting more frequent as time goes on.
MarkBristow- is there any way you can find out what module the dealer replaced? it would help others dealing with this issue.
