Default Shifter stuck?

Anybody else ever have an issue where the shifter will not not allow you to go beyond Neutral from the DRIVE position?

Last night i went to turn around and pulled into a side street and then tried to go in reverse and the shifter would not go beyond Neutral. I even tried a bit of force, nothing. I continued in drive to the end of the road and again tried to back up, same problem. It will go into Neutral but not past that point. I was over a 100 miles from home and it was 1am so i did not want to continue to try to resolve the issue in case i made things worse. I continued my drive home and when i got home i tried to go into reverse and it worked as normal with no issues.

A. Has this happened to anybody else and if so, what was the cause and solution?

and

B. IF this happens again is their some sort of emergency override? Now i'm worried ill be trapped somewhere if i nose in anywhere and HAVE to reverse to get out of the situation.

I've had it happen before. In the winter here in MN one early snow was REALLY slushy and driving in it packed it up under the truck. The shift linkage below the shifter is exposed and was packed in with thick slush. Had problems moving the shifter when it was like that. I could see this happening in other situations were mud, weeds, or a stick jams the shift linkage.

Climb under the truck and check that area. You'll probably find some debris up there.

Twice since I bought my truck in 2010 I have had a small pebble get stuck between the shift linkage and the transmission housing.

Did you check for any fault codes? If not, you can have your servicing dealer inspect vehicle.

I'm guessing this will fall under the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty?

As information, i drove the truck all day today and had no issues at all with the shifter.

It will depend on what is diagnosed. Your warranty booklet will stipulate the covered components under the powertrain warranty. Hopefully the issue resolved itself.

both times this has happened on my truck I have taken it in to a service centre and both times they couldn't find anything wrong. I took it upon myself to crawl under the truck and could see a fresh scratch on the side of the transmission housing which confirms a pebble stuck in between the shift lever and housing. It is an easy fix when it happens you just need to push the pebble out with a screw driver.

are you talking about column shifter or slap shifter?

i have a 13 with the slap shift. once in a blue moon for some reason when shifting myself. it won't up shift when pressed right. the shifter moves right but will stay in the lower gear. yet if i hold it all the way right it will skip back into drive with no problem... kinda odd.

i'm thinking my problem is the computer is running the show and not my foot/hands. i miss drive by wire!! computer throttle's kinda suck at times.
