Hissing in steering column/under dash?
Hi,
2011 RAM 2500 Mega 4WD w/6.7. Today I noticed a hissing noise coming from under the dash or in steering column area after it starts up and continues while running. It's not real loud - I have to turn radio down to hear it. It'll go away momentarily turning left/right or even by applying brakes. No leaks visible inside or out. Anybody else hear of this?

Could this be coming from your radio speakers? With stations that tend to be on the weak side, I get noticeable interference until I step on the brakes or put on the turn signal - the interference comes back when I remove brake light/blinker load. I don't know what causes this, I haven't had enough time to do any hands-on research & it's getting cold here so I'll probably need to wait till spring.

1. Check for damage or mispositioned steering column shaft/coupling dash boot seal. Ensure boot is properly installed and seals against sheet metal. Reposition or replace steering column shaft/coupling dash boot seal.
2. Mis-routed power steering hose. Check routing of power steer hoses.
3. Restriction in pressure or return hose. Using an electronic listening tool, determine if noise is coming from either pressure or return hose. Replace hose that noise is present within.
4. Noisy valve in power steering gear. For evaluation and correction, (Refer to 19 - Steering - Diagnosis and Testing) .
