Default Replacing stock tires, question

My 2011 Dodge RAM 1500 needs new tires. The LT275/70R/17 size must be a weird size because they're very hard to find and ridiculously expensive. I went to a tire dealership today and he said that i could run a P265/70/17 and have a larger selection of tires. I don't pull much, a 17 foot boat on occasion. Any input on the pros or cons of going this way, or just stick to the factory stock size. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

P265/70-17 was the stock size on my 2009 Crewcab. Still running that size with no issues, my towing maxes out at about 7000lbs.

LT tires are typically more expensive, although tire rack lists quite a few in your size. The tires I run are Firestone Destination AT. The P265/70-17 size costs $156 and the LT275/70R/17 size costs $192

so i should be fine going from the 275 70 17 to the 265 70 17? Any speedometer concerns or other concerns even though the suggestions are 275? Thanks already, appreciated the input

As for the speedo, there would be a minor error there going from a 101 in to 99.2 in circumference. Not sure that a 1.8% difference would matter much.

285/70/17 is also a more common tire size than the 275's. I've never liked going to a small tire since it just makes the truck look a little off. Either way your speedo shouldn't be much of an issue.

Default 285's vs the 265's

Thanks for your reply, the more I read, the more that I see most people are going to the 285's simply if no other reason, the "look" and height that it brings to the truck. Thanks again for the reply.

I found when looking for tires that the 285's were often not even $100 more per set locally than the 265's. You will lose a little bit of mileage going to a 285, heck even going to a little more aggressive tread pattern will make you lose a bit. If ya like the look, go for the 285's. If you dont care go with 265's. I personally just went with 265's...

I have 20's on mine, but i recently bought a set of BFG Long Trail TA's, they are an amazing improvement compared to the crappy Goodyears that came on the truck.

I think the 275's were on the TRX4? at least back in 09. the LT will raise the price as will the less common size. you'll have to check with different brands and styles if you want to keep that size. I have found it odd how little selection there is with the 17" tires.
