I am buying this vehicle, and I was wondering how to determine what auto trans it has?
Also it has 110000 miles on it with no record of a trans fluid change, and I have heard different things about trans fluid changes with vehicles that have lots of miles

2009 = 5 speed

There is only two differences, 2 or 4wheel drive. And the only difference is the 4wheel drive has a deeper pan (holds more fluid) therefor uses a different filter.

If you are buying the filter from the dealer all you need is the VIN and they can hook you up.

If you go to a local parts house they will need to know 2 or 4wheel drive, engine size, etc.

I changed mine at 120,000 miles and the fluid was not burnt. There was also no sludge in the bottom of the pan. The reason I pulled the pan was because it had rusted out over the exhaust crossover pipe.

My transfer case oil was badly discolored. An easy change though...

2009 115K miles no fluid change as it has not been recommended dealer performs all maintenance so I would say not unusual.

I would change it not knowing how the previous owner treated it.

from the manual of a 2009 Ram;

60,000 Miles (100,000 km) or 60 Months Maintenance Service Schedule
❏ Change the automatic transmission fluid and filter if using your vehicle for any of the following: police, taxi, fleet, or frequent trailer towing.

120,000 Miles (200,000 km) or 120 Months Maintenance Service Schedule

❏ Change the automatic transmission fluid and filter(s).
