Your not the first person... I was also having this same issue in my 2010. I was also getting a check engine light, and it was only in the morning. But turning off the truck and then back on, would fix the issue. Question for you, when you get the service 4WD light, is your Coolant temp gauge working? if is not, you are having the same issue I was.
I just fixed the issue. The issue had to do with the cooling system (Why the service 4wd light was turning on also.... I have NO IDEA) I replaced the coolant temp sensor (super easy and cheap part) and then I topped off and burped my coolant system. I found my coolant was quite low for no known reason, no leaks or anything. But as soon as I did this, the issue was completely solved. That was about 2 weeks ago.
Any update on this? My 2010 has started doing this when it goes from outside ( very cold) to sitting inside for service work ( oil change, regular maintenance! They scanned it and can't find anything? If I unplug battery and let sit - it clears up! Ehen it decided to act up, first the temp guage doesn't work ( either on dash or in info center) then after about 1 mile the check 4wheeldrive lights up) and sometime the cooling fans come on ( but not always). I am having the thermostat replaced , cooling system flushed and the temp sensor replaced. Will see if that helps?
I've been reading of the "service 4 wheel drive" warning light because it came on my 2012 Dodge Ram diesel. We finally got a warm day and I got under there and started looking around. I checked the front first looking for loose or broken wires on the wheel speed controls. Nothing in the front. When I got to the rear I saw it right away.
A broken (melted) wire on the passenger side. That wire follows the brake line across the axle. It was melted just below the exhaust pipe. Probably where the old hot exhaust pipe was lowered onto it while the new exhaust system was installed. I spliced a wire onto the broken wire and, presto, no more warning lights and everything works. I might remind readers also that the cruise control won't work when there's anything wrong with the wheel speed sensors or any warning lights. Hope this helps someone save some time and money by not having to go the the parts changers.

I have a 2018 Dodge 3500. A warning light came on “serv 4WD”. The dealer wasn’t completely clear as to whether I could drive it and pull a trailer. Is this safe?

The cruise control will still work while the 4-wheel service light is on, as for wheel speed sensors no it will not work. Also you will know whether it is a wheel speed sensor by the traction control light.
I would like to add that I am also having this issue with my 2014 2500 Ram. I checked all my diff fluids and my transfer case. Topped them all of them off and still get the light. Though when I start the truck, it says that it is in 4 wheel drive lock and then goes to the 4 wheel drive service message. I have looked along my frame rails and cannot find any burnt or scuffed wiring. Any ideas?
