You can, but, the computer will whine about it, and your gas mileage will likely suck.

pulled the thermostat it was in correctly the truck still over heated well it would have but I shut it down or coasted to prevent it climbing over 240 was the highest it got.
can't determine why its overheating. Waterpump is not squealing not leaking from weep hole. Head gasket looks good no pressure from radiator no oil on the stick and no puffing
from the tail pipe. only water coming from the engine is blowing out the pressure relief below the cap. I did pull the thermostat like I said I am getting a code about a misfire from either
the ignition coil or cylinder 7. could this be what you mean about the computer will whine about it. really need help with this any help is greatly appreciated. I am stumped and everyone I talk to
tells me oh must be the thermostat then I tell them the thermostat is out the I get Oh I don't know then.

Misfire on number 7 is a separate issue.

Few things that can cause overheating.... Bad thermostat, low on coolant, bad water pump, blockage in the system somewhere, or a blown headgasket...... You can get a test kit to check for combustion products in your coolant, that will tell you for sure if its a headgasket problem......

Swap the questionable coil with another one, on another cylinder. See if your miss moves.
