Mobil Oil, becareful what one you use.
This thread is important to all, but especially is of importance to Canadian Ram truck owners. Yesterday I picked up 2 - 4.4 litre jugs of Mobil 1 Extended Performance Synthetic Motor Oil 5w-20 for my 2017 Ram Longhorn with the 5.7 hemi engine. The reason it was on sale. I never used this oil before. I use Quaker State, Pennzoil, and Castrol Oil products. After I arrived home and start reading the back, I noticed no Chrysler spec. numbers. I contacted Mobil Oil. Today I received a reply.
Mobil Oil reply - Based on what you've told us, your vehicle manufacturer recommends a 5W-20 viscosity and oil that meets Chrysler MS-6395. Mobil Super 1000 5W-20 https://www.mobil.com/English-CA/Passenger-Vehicle-Lube/pds/IOCAMobil-Super-1000 meets MS-6395 and is available in quart packages in many areas in Canada. Your engine oil capacity is approximately 7 quarts and the recommended oil filter is M1-113/M1-113A. Mobil 1 Extended Performance does not make the MS-6395 claim.
My reply back -- Thank you for replying quickly. I See you only recommend a conventional oil only, but not any of your synthetic motor oil is there a reason?
Mobil Oil reply - Dear Xxxx,
Mobil Super Synthetic 5W-20 and 0W-20 (https://mobiloil.com/en/motor-oils/m...ynthetic#0W-20)also meet MS-6395, but these oils are not available in Canada at this time in consumer packaging. However, Mobil Super Synthetic 0W-20 is sold in bulk quantities to distributors.
Please visit the link to service centers and other resources.
I will return the oil and purchased another product. Go to your Castrol - Pennzoil - Quaker State - Valvoline sites and there are links to all of these for your Ram truck. Specify the year and engine and they will show their recommended oils for your vehicle

Hope this helps others to beware of what motor oil to use of your choice.
Cheers

When I bought my '09 ram 5.7 hemi, mobil1 was ok. Mobil1 hasn't changed that I know of, the 5.7 hemi hasn't changed that I know of either. What's changed from the 09 to my 17 is the oil change interval. I doubt one can't use mobil1 in the 17s hemi.
You can use Mobil Oil - As they stated - Mobil Super 1000 5W-20 and Mobil Super Synthetic 5W-20 ( which is not available in retail outlets in Canada) . Pedro all I know is that oil filters are different from a 2009 and a 2017. I think oil filters changed in 2014. If I'm wrong, hopefully someone will correct me on what year oil filter sizes changed.
The filter on the early gen 4s is larger than the newer ones. The reason for the change (as far as I know) was the change from hydraulic to electric power steering assist. The electric steering requires a smaller filter. There are many folks still using the bigger filter on the newer trucks because some feel that bigger is better. I stand by my statement that Mobil1 synthetic will work fine. Just google the question and you will see many theories about why Mobil1 will not test it's products to satisfy FCAs MS-6395 requirements. As noted by their response to you, that " Mobil 1 Extended Performance does not make the MS-6395 claim.", it does not say that it doesn't meet it either.
Why is Mobil-1 Not on MS-6395
As mentioned, Mobil-1 was included in the MS-6395 certification (as well as MS-10725 for other Chrysler vehicles) and Mobil products used in factory fills. Mobil-1 was even printed on the oil filler caps for some of Chrysler’s automobiles. As early as February 2009 Chrysler started phasing out Mobil and started using Pennzoil for factory fills. One explanation for the change, is SOPUS (Shell Oil Products US), parent of Pennzoil, was brought in with the purchase of Chrysler by Fiat. The assumption is Fiat had an established and stronger relationship with SOPUS.Source: http://jeepoffroadadventures.com/wp/?page_id=1324
For what it's worth. I used Mobil1 in my '09 ram 5.7 hemi for most of the 119k miles I had it. When I sold it, it was running as new. No oil usage between changes (I changed it at around 5k miles). The idle and drive oil pressure was about the same as my current 2017 with 18k miles. I didn't notice anything different between Mobil1 and Valvoline so IMHO Mobil1 is fine for the hemi.
