Default Distance To Empty

2017 RAM 1500 with 120 liter tank

My DTE indicator and fuel gauge shows low fuel. I then drive for another 50km or more.

At the fuel pump, I can only add 95 liters until full.

Question: Why is the DTE and fuel gauge saying I have less fuel than what is in the tank?

Does your owners manual make mention of anything? DTE is a calculation based on driving style an conditions, IIRC it is not an actual measurement of how much fuel is in the tank. Your fuel gauge reading low may be another issue or part of the issue. I would take it in and use your warranty for the fuel gauge first. That may the correct the DTE calculation.

iirc the DTE is based off a calculation from the fuel remaining sent fromt he gauge, so if your gauge is reading low you will show low.

that said, i have a similar observation with my 2017 (i have the 32 gallon tank, and iv only ever gotten 28 gallons into it, even with the light on). I just adjusted to it and have learned that when the light comes on i have about 5 gallons left.

i have a hunch that they are doing the calculations based off the standard 26 (i think) gallon tank, which would make more sense based on percentages to me, but i have no confirmation of this.

also note that i did receive a recall notice where they wanted to update the software to adjust the DTE readout to make it 'more accurate, i havent taken the truck in for it bc idc enough, until something serious comes up i cant be bothered taking it in for software update recalls which wont improve my ownership experience.

on my 2011 with 32 gallon tank is similar. i once drove 90 highway miles after the low gas light came on. i did not want to push my luck too much so i gassed up. i see it as a plus for having such a high reserve..... and i would not trust the DTE indicator on any vehicle and would rather just trust the gauge

Dodge seems to have been REALLY generous with what they consider "empty".... on my 98, with the 34 gallon tank, when the gauge is on E, there is still six gallons of gas in the tank.

I dont know. I drive by a lot of gas stations and fill up at 1/4 tank.I dont trust the computer estimate and have had vehicles that the gauge is not as accurate as you would hope. Why drive until the light comes on?

well for me i tend to go my milage, and 4 days between top offs tends to set off the light (even with a 32 gallon tank) so im not interested in extra stops.

I'm not taking the risk of burning out a perfectly good fuel pump by driving to E or having the light come on before refilling the tank.Nope,no thank you.Been there and done that many years ago and don't care to repeat the experience.
