Hello, do you have audio of the ticking sound your Ram was making? I have a 2012 Ram with the 5.7 hemi with about 130K miles and it just started making a ticking sound last week. I plan on trying to change the oil and use the thicker oil, but I see it didn't work for you.

I posted this a few weeks ago. In this post, I put the video of the ticking. Maybe you can find it here.

The first ticking I had was from exhaust manifold bolts. I replaced all of them. There was only 2 broken on the drivers side, but I decided to replace all of them because i figured it was just a matter of time before they all broke. Then about 2 months after that, the ticking came back and didn't go away. Originally Posted by tpitts11

We took a mechanics stethoscope and listened to the engine. We did determine that the noise was coming from #1 and #3 cylinders. But.....we didn't know if it was lifters or possibly deeper into the engine. When listening to the noise, it was more pronounced from the drivers side tire well. When the hood was open, you couldn't hear it as much, which lead me to believe it was deeper in the engine. Had 2 different mechanics listen to it and they both told me there was no way to tell exactly what it was without tearing the engine down. That's when I decided it was time to get rid of the tick...permanently! I sold it!
I am so disappointed with Dodge! That truck was awesome. It rode like a Cadillac. I loved the radio, I loved everything about the truck....except for the hemi engine. Now mind you, when it was new....that thing would fly! I loved the power. I just loved my truck. It was so hard getting rid of it. The truck I have now, is great too. But the dodge was just my first choice in trucks at the time I bought it. Unless Dodge resolves the issues with the hemi (and I doubt they will because this has been an on-going issue for years). They have the exhaust manifold bolts that break and then the ticking of the engine. Its just a joke in my opinion because these trucks are awesome trucks. Yeah, when I bought the truck, it came with a 5 year, 100,000 mile warranty on the power train which would cover the engine I believe. For me, my 5 years was up before the 100,000 miles came into play. So I was screwed.
Dodge just needs to fix this issue. And quit telling people that it's normal....its NOT normal. Something is happening to these engines and it's a shame that Dodge won't do anything to fix the issue.

Yeah, I don't consider it "Normal" for lifters to munch up camshafts on a fairly regular basis. Unless it was a build fault, in which case, you would likely see the problem in the first 100 miles....... But, coming at at north of 100K? That's a design issue. Planned Obsolescence?Originally Posted by Texas Girl

Agreed!! I honestly can’t believe that people continue to buy these trucks with the Hemi issues. As long as Dodge keeps selling them, (and don’t have to fix this issue) they will continue to do nothing. It’s sad!! These trucks are the best looking trucks and most comfortable trucks on the road. But the Hemi???? Sucks!!! Originally Posted by HeyYou

I know people will replace lifters and cams with after market parts. I’m guessing the after market parts work. If that’s the case, why can’t Dodge do something that would prevent people from having to do this? It’s unbelievable to me. When I traded my RAM in on a used Tundra at a Dodge dealership, people were drueling over the new RAM trucks. I so wanted to walk up to them and tell them to reconsider buying one. But.... that wasn’t the answer either and I didn’t want to get thrown out of the dealership. LOL.

Not everyone experiences the problem though, and it's really random who does, and who doesn't. Dodge was offering a lifetime powertrain warranty for a while as well. Don't know if they still are.... but, that would go a long way toward taking some of the pain out of the problem. That, and it seems like the problem is more prevalent in trucks, than in cars with the same engine..... Different cams? Different lifters? I don't know.... Friend of mine has a 17 hellcat that is his daily driver... (yeah, must be nice....) his hemi is quiet as a church mouse. The exhaust out the back though, that's an entirely different proposition. Is it all hemis or just the 5.7? And is it only with the ones that have MDS?? I've got 82,9xx miles on my 05 2500. I'm gonna jinx myself but no broken manifold bolts, and no ticking only at start up, but quiets down. I'm knocking on wood now 🤣🤣Originally Posted by HeyYou

I'm still looking into a new power wagon with the 6.4
I'll only buy Dodge, I absolutely will not buy a Ford, I'll walk. And I'm not a Chevy guy, never have been, don't really care for the design of them........ Any year. And I need atleast a 3/4 ton for my 30' triaxle trailer. I know the half tons now can tow 10,000# but I don't believe in that....... Conditions are right that trailer will drive the tow vehicle where the trailer wants to go, and your just along for the ride.

If you have ticking at cold start up and it goes away, you should have the manifold bolts checked out. That’s one of the main symptoms of broken manifold bolts. It ticks for about 30 seconds to 1.5 minutes. Then goes away.
