Steering binding....Need advice
My father recently bought a 2018 Ram 4x4 with the 6.4 hemi. Got it used with 63 thousand miles. Generally speaking he loves the truck, hates the steering. When turning sometimes it feels like it binds a little. I got under to look at the steering and found something disturbing. The drag links adjuster sleeve has a lock nut on each side of it. Thats normal. BUT, the lock nuts had been tack welded to the adjuster sleeve. Took it back to dealership and they said it is a recall, and thats the fix. I did manage to find info on the recall. Mechanic wasnt blowing smoke. Thats how Ram says to fix it. Ok, Fine, but it still has that feeling of binding from time to time. Anyone else delt with this? Is there a real fix for the problem? Or is this just another of their "Hemi Ticks" Its normal, dont worry about it......
I run a 1500 and thankfully have a different setup and don't have to deal with the recall, however, I am aware of the 2500 or 3500 drag link repair. I have seen some of the fixes, they look hideous, and a stupid fix that potentially ends future serviceability. I wouldn't think at that mileage the draglink would be causing the binding, its possible. You can buy a new one piece aftermarket setup. Its hard to say, it could be the tierods and or ball joints, too. Good luck dude. Hopefully someone else chimes in with additional info.
